Importance of pre-LS recs

I am a OL attending law school in the fall. I am currently working for a company that is in the same field that I eventually want to practice law in (i think..). I have been with the company for 2.5 years, and I am debating whether to quit a few months before classes start.
I want to quit bc I hate the job (underpaid, EXTREMELY overworked, ethical concerns), i would like to see my family a bit, and i would honestly just like some time to relax and prepare for law school.
However, if i leave early my boss will be quite upset with me bc the summer is when we generate the most business. When I first told my boss I was going to law school, he asked if I would stick around for Jun-Sep and I told him i would (i actually meant it at the time, and I think he would have fired me then if i said no). I know that if i leave this job early, I will burn any bridges I have with him and lose future recommendations. It also seems a little silly to put in over 2 years just to throw it away in the last few months
So my question - will i be shooting myself in the foot if i quit? I never want to work for this company again, but I will want to work in the same field and I am not sure how important the recommendation will be - especially for my 1L summer.
Also, how important would you say it is to enjoy your summer? Is it a really bad idea to work super long hours right before heading to law school? (on the order of 100-120hrs/wk) How important is it to prepare/read stuff before starting?
