Help a 1L decide: firm? league? government?

Hi all,

I'm fortunate enough to have three employment options from which to choose. I need to make a decision within the coming 2 weeks. I'm mainly interested in corporate law (M&A) and entertainment law (agency). I could see myself working at a firm for the long haul, working in-house (general counsel) for a major league/agency, or branching off and becoming an agent.

The firm job pays well (around $2800/wk for the entire summer) while the government job is unpaid and the sports league provides a small stipend (<$500/week).

What do you think?

Thanks for your help!

I think the sports job will set you apart and be a valuable networking opportunity.

Oh, it's 2800 per week for around 9 to 11 weeks.

Thanks for your post!

I would still take the job you are more interested in. Sounds like the league job would be the most interesting of the three.

I was thinking the same thing. The only thing preventing me from accepting the league job is that I'm not sure how future interviewers (law firms) will view it, since I don't really know how much actual legal exposure I'll get (I'm afraid it'll involve lots of clerical work). But I definitely think it'll be a better/less-bland conversation starter than a plain old firm job. Then again, money is always tough to turn down.

This post may be relevant to my interests. How would you choose between firm offer (IP) and internship at a tech-related major regulatory agency?

i assume it would depend on your long-term goals and how tech-related the reg agency is.

I think you should take the firm job. Seems less suspect than the league one.

*enters OCI interview*

interviewer *takes cursory glance at resume*: "So, how'd you like working for [whichever of the three options you chose]"

OP: "Uh, it was great. I learned a lot, and really enjoyed working for [whichever one of the three options you chose]"

interviewer *glances at watch, bored*: "Great, great. So, do you have any questions?"

*leaves OCI interview, now aware that 1L job equates to ~30 seconds of conversation* *punches wall, frustrated over turning down close to $30k for the chance to say "I worked for the NFL"*

When making 30,000 means paying 2,000+/month on housing and losing your financial aid award, it's basically a wash. And plus, working for a league does sound more interesting than working for, say, Patton Boggs LLP.
