I was thinking of splitting the summer between a firm and a judge
Can I get Federal work study funds for the hours worked at the nonpaying job?

By the non-paying job, you mean judge?
Then usually yes, but you need to run it by your schools financial aid office. You need to fill out a FAFSA and meet certain requirements...

No it's not. Plenty of people would want to avoid broadcasting potential firm jobs ITE, plenty of people would want to avoid broadcasting sensitive financial information. Get over yourself.

Saying you have a job with A firm, without describing any details does not exactly deserve an anonymous post. OP made no indication if it was a V10 or one man shop. Same thing with a judge-it could be a small county judge...not exactly a big deal

You're thinking about this the wrong way. There are social ramifications within law school - a bunch of people on TLS go to schools where there are large TLS savy populations, and ITE when 1Ls are having a hell of a time finding any employment asking about splitting with a firm and a judge, etc. is pretty sensitive. Obviously it isn't risky for future employers.

You're thinking about this the wrong way. There are social ramifications within law school - a bunch of people on TLS go to schools where there are large TLS savy populations, and ITE when 1Ls are having a hell of a time finding any employment asking about splitting with a firm and a judge, etc. is pretty sensitive. Obviously it isn't risky for future employers.

Point taken-Splitting is unique, it isnt hard to find out who does it within a school.

I think you can only use federal work-study if the "nonpaying" employer is willing to pay its portion of your award. I think this is around 20-30% of what you are actually awarded. So, a judge might be able to get you for $3/hour but still might not have the cash to pay you even this paltry sum. This is why work-study in law school is a huge letdown unless you can find an RA type position or something like that.

Kinda off topic in a way, but is it a good idea to split summers between two places? Approximately 10 weeks isn't much too learn a whole lot and half that is not much at all.

I think this was much more common back when people got paying jobs at law firms for the summer but still wanted to volunteer with public interest groups. I think it's still fairly common for people who intern with judges for the summer since those are usually part-time gigs, but yeah otherwise might not make a lot of sense.

Conventional wisdom seems to be that ITE splitting is not advisable if the firm is one where you'd want to work 2L summer/post-grad. I have no opinion on the matter, but I thought I'd pass it on.

Edit: this assumes that the firm offered a "full" summer. If the firm only offered 6-8 weeks, they're unlikely to resent you doing something else during the remainder of your summer.
