How much is bringing in new business a part of your job as a 1st - 3rd year associate in BigLaw? Do you actively go and prospect for new business? Is there pressure? I do this stuff in my career now and it's not too much fun.

Thanks.

During 1-3rd year?
Not at all
You are bottom of the totem pole. Do what you are told.

When does it become something to worry about?

I would assume during 4-5th year, or even above when you want to start showing are partner material. On the other hand, if you know that they arent considering you for partner there, but you have a potential client, take that to another firm and ask for partner :D

Not till you are a senior associate. The partnership in your group will think about what business you will be responsible for before they make you partner. A lot of people develop their book of business by inheriting clients from partners. When you are at that level, you are doing most of the work for the client, and the client and partner know that. Partners can give you a % of the income from that partner when you make partner.
