i was recently told that i could take the patent bar exam even though i don't have a JD (Bachelor's in chemical engineering).

i googled a bit, and it appears that this is true. however, assuming i were to take and pass the exam, what - if anything - would this allow me to do? wouldn't i still need a JD to practice patent law? would passing the patent bar exam give me any leg up in any other career field (or open up any job opportunities)? thanks for any advice

you can be a patent agent without a JD. their sole job is to prosecute patents (write them and hash them out with the PTO). they can't litigate or do anything involving legal advice.

it's not a bad gig but there isn't as much demand for them as there used to be. pay varies a lot but could top out at 75-80k pre-ITE.
