How long is too long to sit on an offer?

I asked for 2 weeks, and they said ok. But I know that firms have revoked offers for those who take too long; anyone know whether PI/Govt places would do the same, even though they've told you that 2 weeks is fine?

In my city, about this same time last year, the DA was revoking offers. That was because they ran out of money, not because people took too long to accept.

Why are you waiting?

Well, this is an unpaid position, so running out of money won't be an issue.

I thought 2 weeks was standard? I assume if that's a problem, they'd have told me so when I asked for 2 weeks.

If they told you two weeks, I think you have two weeks.

Actually, they didn't give me a deadline. I asked for two weeks and they said that's fine. Same thing, I suppose.

I know firms back in 2008 revoked offers even though they told the students that they had 45 days, and it's because they were over-subscribed. I can see a lot of the offerees for my position taking the offer on the spot or in a day or two. I hope that govt/PI places are more "honorable" than firms and would at least contact me if they are about to be oversubscribed and need a response from me ASAP.

Yeah, but firms also revoked accepted offers, deferred people who thought they had jobs, pushed back start dates for those already deferred, and laid off people. Hopefully employer, including PI employers, are being more realistic about hiring needs these days. If not, accepting quick might not save you.
