Assuming T14:

In a good year 80%+ of 2Ls land summer associate gigs that become permanent jobs. This happens through a massive on campus interview before their second year of law school begins.

In a good year ~15% of 1Ls land summer associate gigs. It's not impossible for permenant job offers to arrive, but it is rare. These jobs tend to come from resume mass mailings, personal connections, looking to smaller markets (which might otherwise fail to get any 2Ls), and/or absolutely stellar grades.

Obviously this year it's all much worse. But 1L summer associate positions aren't / weren't just a matter of taking the best grades. I know people who got 1L SA jobs before grades came out in years past, it depends/depended on connections/prior experience.

More generally, I think about 25 to 30% of Northwestern 1Ls used to get paid biglaw back in the boom years. Nowadays, that number must be closer to 5% to 10%.

We were quoted 8% for summer 2009.

I'd actually guess that there are, amazingly enough, more attorneys who practice "international law" than there are 1L SAs this year. But yeah, both are essentially about as common as unicorns/bigfoot.
