Yes, always. That's why it's so tough to get 1L SA positions, because they're mostly for 2L's.acdisagod wrote:Oh, and I was looking at some firms on NALP. It seems they higher far more 2Ls than 1Ls. Is this generally the case?
You also need to remember that some (most?) of those will be diversity clerkships & similar programs. Others will be arrangements with connections.acdisagod wrote:And the more I look through it, the bleeker the prospects. Firms that hired 16 1l's in 2008 are now hiring 8 firms that were hiring 2 are now hiring 0.
A few years ago it was ~30% of UVA 1Ls landing firm gigs.thesealocust wrote:Assuming T14:acdisagod wrote:And the more I look through it, the bleeker the prospects. Firms that hired 16 1l's in 2008 are now hiring 8 firms that were hiring 2 are now hiring 0.
In a good year 80%+ of 2Ls land summer associate gigs that become permanent jobs. This happens through a massive on campus interview before their second year of law school begins.
In a good year ~15% of 1Ls land summer associate gigs. It's not impossible for permenant job offers to arrive, but it is rare. These jobs tend to come from resume mass mailings, personal connections, looking to smaller markets (which might otherwise fail to get any 2Ls), and/or absolutely stellar grades.
Obviously this year it's all much worse. But 1L summer associate positions aren't / weren't just a matter of taking the best grades. I know people who got 1L SA jobs before grades came out in years past, it depends/depended on connections/prior experience.
i'm generally not a semantics nazi, but this one bothers me:Corsair wrote:I'm generally not a grammar Nazi, but this one bothers me for some reason.acdisagod wrote:Oh, and I was looking at some firms on NALP. It seems they higher far more 2Ls than 1Ls. Is this generally the case?
"Hire."

"spelling."
(sorry)
Nice try, but the spelling of "higher" is correct. It's usage is not, ergo grammar.jayn3 wrote:i'm generally not a semantics nazi, but this one bothers me:Corsair wrote:I'm generally not a grammar Nazi, but this one bothers me for some reason.acdisagod wrote:Oh, and I was looking at some firms on NALP. We were quoted 8% for summer 2009.TTT-LS wrote:I was a biglaw 1L SA in 2008 (pre-ITE). While one of the interviews I got was a direct result of networking/connections/prior work experience, several others seemed to be based on my resume *and* some pretty sick fall 1L grades. Grades definitely played a role with one of the big Chicago firms that invited me for an interview, for instance.
More generally, I think about 25 to 30% of Northwestern 1Ls used to get paid biglaw back in the boom years. Nowadays, that number must be closer to 5% to 10%.
um....it's still not grammar. i would probably argue that we're both wrong, and tcr is "usage."Renzo wrote: Nice try, but the spelling of "higher" is correct. It's usage is not, ergo grammar.
Oh, and insert capitalization-Nazi meme here.
At Michigan it was 16% at "law firms" in summer of 2009, but there's no separate "biglaw" breakout.rayiner wrote:We were quoted 8% for summer 2009.TTT-LS wrote:I was a biglaw 1L SA in 2008 (pre-ITE). That's really hard to get though...MF248 wrote:Top 5% at Princeton Law should do.
I know of an AA male at MVPBDNGC who got his 1L gig before grades came out.McNabb wrote:For URMs I know that 1L firm jobs are very doable--even in this economy. I know an AA male who attends one of MBVP and is well below median who landed a top firm job in the Texas market, with no ties and straight from undergrad.
Depends on what you mean by "big". If that means V100 in NY/DC/Chi, then I agree that 1L SA's are very rare. If it just means NLJ250 or firms paying local market rates, then I don't think it's that rare. A T14 student w/ties to a smaller market has a realistic, if not terrific, shot at a 1L SA. In many cases, even before grades come out.TTT-LS wrote:I'd actually guess that there are, amazingly enough, more attorneys who practice "international law" than there are 1L SAs this year. But yeah, both are essentially about as common as unicorns/bigfoot.thesealocust wrote:
OP should have a poll: Which is more mythical, the big firm 1L summer associateship ITE or the lawyer who practices 'international law'?
