Will we really be making $160,000?

I hear a lot that even though many top schools advertise that the median salary is $160,000, that in actuality that info is very misleading. Assuming that most of the graduates submit salary data, how is this data misleading? Doesn't it mean that half the class have salaries under 160,000 and half have salaries over that figure?

with grammar like that, you will not be making $160,000 per year.

I think the "1" added before $60,000 is a mistake. In this economy it's cost prohibitive to fix all the pamphlets, websites, data, etc. to reflect the actual salary figure so it's kept at 160k. Sorry about that.

LipLaw, just wait for employment data next year. If it still says that, and they actually tell you how many are reporting, then your case is solid. Expectations are that you will not see it again though.

that is a faulty assumption, particularly with tier 3 and 4 schools. for example, look at nyls employment data: --LinkRemoved--

96% reporting employment information (are you employed? even as a babysitter or night watchmen?)
25% reporting salary information

then nyls breaks it down even further, until they can finally show a 160k median in the private sector. its quite misleading to say the least, and even though the information is there to determine that it is probably complete crap, they present it quite deceptively. i am too lazy to look at other schools that aren't even in a top market, but i'd imagine this type of statistical manipulation is rampant.

edit: to avoid complete grammar fail.

Almost all law grads earn 160K or more per year. They always have and they always will. The economy is sound and firms are hiring in mass quantities. The hardest decision you will likely make 3 years out of school is which color Porche to buy and whether you want to bang the blonde model on the regular (keeping the two brunettes to the side), or some other reasonable dating structure therein, while trying to decide between McCallen 25 or Louis for an after dinner drink at Peter L's after leaving work at exactly 5:01pm at a biglaw firm of your choice, having worked a full day in your dream practice area (international public law), writing briefs to the SCOTUS or at the worst one of those pesky Courts of Appeal at the gasp.. circuit level....

Sit back an enjoy the ride. Any T100 LS will do.

I liked where you were going with this until we got to saving the whales. Sarcasm is a delicate device....not to be used carelessly. Possible edit please? I think if you subsitute the whale thing for something else, It will be very lulz-worthy. :D

FWIW I already have a T10 acceptance and I'm going into it with the mindset that I'm going to get median grades wherever I go and end up slaving away at a $60k job unless the legal job market improves significantly.

True. Schools like to be extra cautious when providing their salary information. They don't want to risk any students feeling disappointed upon graduation. The 160k is probably a conservative figure.
