Diversity/1Ls - how do you bring it up?

Hey everyone --

I'm curious how one goes about letting a firm know that you are a diverse applicant. It's no secret that "URMs" have a better shot at landing firm jobs during 1L than "ORMs," but not all firms have applications that allow you to select race.

Is there a tactful way to do it without saying "I'm hispanic"? Is it taboo to talk in the cover letter about the diversity you could contribute?

Thanks all.

Some firms specifically have diversity programs. If that's the case, you should indicate interest in the program.

If it's just a generic cover letter, I think a good way to reference diversity would be to refer to something in your resume that signals your background (participation in a group/club/service organization like NSBE, SHPE, etc). That way you're showcasing accomplishment & involvement as well as background.
