So, having received my Hastings rejection in the post today (alas), I am going to be heading down to Linda Vista come August. Who else is going to be there, where are you coming from and what, if any, parts of the law are you interested in?

I'll be there! I'm getting pretty excited, except the part of moving everything I own 2,000 miles. What is everyone doing about housing? Does USD provide a list of people looking for roommates?

I am pretty sure they send out a roommate list after the June deposit. I could be wrong though. I am lucky and I live fairly close already so I have been down to SD a couple times to start the search for where to live. Getting really excited to finally start!

Same here Kittles. Hopefully that roommate list comes out soon. I did go on a tour of the law school in which the guide told us that people in our sections were spread out for the most part. This is very understandable as SD has many nice places for students, but also speaks to the theory that not too many people are living with other law school students. Hopefully that's not true.

I am pretty set on either living with another law student or flying solo. It seems it would be better to live with someone who can relate to the first year stresses. We'll see though I guess...

it's a big toss-up. living solo has its advantages: don't have to worry about messy/loud roommates. but we are all social beings to some extent so that would probably be difficult. also, if you luck out and live with somebody in your same section it will hopefully make your 1L year a lot easier. very easy to talk about issues with your classmates if you live under the same roof

It's definitely a toss up. I have always had roommates, and loved it and am definitely used to having someone around the house other than myself. But I was burned big time my freshman year of college with a horrible roommate experience, so since then I have been a little traumatized and have always lived with people I am pretty good friends with. I probably just need to get over it considering my bad experience happened 6 years ago, and I am at least confident it couldn't be worse :)

a viable option that you should look into is the graduate housing. have you own place but live in a building with other law students.

Ideally I would prefer to live with roommates and within walking distance of the school. We'll see how doable that actually is, and I am coming from a very long ways away. I've followed up on the graduate housing, but it is quite expensive and they said its availability would not be determined until summer (May? June? Something like that, don't remember).

I'm here unless I get off the Hastings waitlist by June...I probably won't. Pretty excited to be in sunny San Diego! I'm originally from the coast of Maine so I've had "ocean withdrawal" the last few years here in DC. Not looking forward to the move from this far away. I'll most likely do the roommate thing - there is a really luxurious Archstone complex about 2.5 miles away from campus that I've been eying since I got my USD acceptance. A 2BR there rents for the same price I pay for my DC studio...yikes!

I'm hoping to arrive at the beginning of August so I will have some time to adjust/relax/learn to surf before school starts :)

I'm coming from Seattle and have never been to San Diego, although that's changing in a couple weeks; going down to check it out and get a feel for the place. As far as living goes, if I end up there I've got a buddy who will be a 2L who might have a spot. He lives with other classmates and they've all done very well for themselves grade wise (all are top 20%, my buddy is in the hunt for top 10 students period). I'm thinking if you can, live with students.

Pretty stoked, thank God they came through with some dollars.

100%

About the housing situation... I am currently still living in central europe until the beginning of august. Hopefully I'll still be able to find a place somewhere at a decent location in time?

I've been checking craigslist for an idea of availability for some months now though. Something should be possible, but the quality of that something, don't know. I'll be coming from London myself.

I will be there in August, so 100% (or as close as my non-committal self will go). Anyone else visit/go to an ASD? I enjoyed it, really sold the place and the atmosphere as well as the faculty for me.

Does anyone know where most of the law students live? Right near campus or in the surrounding areas?

It was my impression that people are somewhat scattered throughout the surrounding areas, but I would like to know a little more about that too.

My tour guide mentioned that a number of students lived in one particular apartment complex neighboring campus, but that is all I know. San Diego isn't a very difficult city to get around, I imagine students are relatively spread out.

Incidentally, I got an email from the Residential Life department yesterday regarding applying for graduate and law student housing on campus. Has anyone else looked into it or know anything about it other than what is to be found on the website?

I'm from San Diego and I'm interested in Tax law. I actually think I might have met at least one of you at the admitted student's day a few weeks ago.

Thanks all and I look forward to going through the struggles and triumphs of our first years of law school together!

Getting ready to send in my 2nd deposit. I hear on-campus housing is next to impossible to get, so looks like I'll be searching for an apartment. Coming from 2500 miles away, so I guess I'll be looking online. I'll probably be looking for roommates...joined the facebook group...
