Haha, interesting dilemma! I'm not sure these days, because facebook puts everything (and then some) out there on people's homepages...

Seriously, lol.

So jadedv you going to smu as well?

I will most likely be attending SMU pt if I don't get off of the waitlist at UH or the best campus visit of all-time at Baylor.

I'll be going to SMU this year, and I just bought a house, a 2500 sq. ft house, in Plano that will cost me probably about $1,000 less per month, than renting an apartment in Uptown would be. Well $1,000 is a little over exaggerated, its probably closer to $600. If you want to save a little extra money, and don't mind driving too far, I'm talking 20 minutes at the most, then Plano and Richardson are a better bet.
After relentless searching for "affordable" apts and houses in Uptown, Park Cities, etc... I'm FINALLY taking your advice. Thank goodness.

If you need some help finding some places let me know, I have friends that live in all the areas and cities surrounding SMU.

I would have preferred living near Park Cities, but the economist in me thinks Richardson is a better deal.

I'm still worried about the commute though. What do you think jtw? How is morning traffic if you're southbound on Central?

have fun with that commute.... my friend has to leave her house an hour and a half early in the morning to get to work because she lives in Plano and works on campus at SMU. i live in uptown now and like i siad, my roommate and i pay about $700 in rent which I think is affordable for the area and it's about 5 minutes from SMU.

Traffic sucks in the morning going South on 75 (which is the highway you take from Richardson and Plano). It's becuase ppl with families move to these smaller cities and commute to Dallas for work. You will be driving into traffic

I went to Dallas this past weekend to look at apartments and found what I thought were some pretty good deals. I know we saw a 2-2 in uptown for 1200 a month (I think it was the Marquis at Cedar Springs).

Oh that's encouraging news. I'll be in Dallas this weekend... we're looking at a couple townhomes in Richardson (they are SUCH good deals, I can't resist), and lots of houses and condos closer to SMU. Wish me luck...

Thanks betasteve - I appreciate that post, it's very interesting to see what life might look like in three(!) months...

I talked to a 2L at the part-time dinner the other night, and she lives in Allen, which for those of you who aren't from the Dallas area, is far north. I live in Plano, which taking highway 75 to class is roughly 25 minutes with no traffic. But there is the DART rail that picks up in north plano, and all along 75, and according to her it takes her about 30 minutes to get to Mockingbird Station (which is across the highway from campus), and then takes a SMU bus to campus that picks up every 20 minutes. According to her, if you buy it through SMU, you get a three year DART pass for only $5, which is a great deal considering how much money you will save on gas, and the normal wear and tear on your car. The only problem is that the DART rail stops operating late in the evenings, I believe its around 12am or so, anybody have knowledge on that. Just thought I would throw this out there to people who are trying to find cheaper places to live north of campus, but are worried about the drive.

I wonder why SMU doesn't have more TLS representation. I would think by now this thread would be a lot longer. Anyways, congrats to everyone! SMU seems like a great school. Sorry for infiltrating the thread...

Thanks for the informative post. I am actually looking at houses in Allen while I decide if I'll be at SMU in the fall, so this info was very helpful. How was the part-time dinner? I wanted to attend, but got stuck at work.

So, we're probably not getting a place in South Richardson... haha. It was a little sketchy, not to mention the commute everyone is warning me about.

The search is still on...

Paid mine online last week, had both the $300 and $400 option available. Maybe the options changed because it's June 1st?

This is really random, but do you guys remember seeing lockers for law students during your visits to SMU? All the other law schools I've visited have lockers... which is sounding more and more like a good idea.

They do have lockers. The 3L who gave my tour said that most people don't use them, though, because the garage is so close people tend to keep their books in their cars. She did say it was a good option for those who commute on public transportation. I think she said they are $25 a year.

After mulling over the decision all weekend, I withdrew last night. I was accepted in late April, and couldn't commit to paying the seat deposit without any word on scholarships. Good luck to everyone heading to SMU next year.
