Bumping, for no reason other than the fact that it's 9 am, I'm bored at work, and I like seeing this thread on top!

Righteous! Did you have to log into the admitted students site to see the finaid info? Anyhow, congratulations, looking forward to meeting ya. Feel free to pop over to the UC Davis School of Law (King Hall) Class of 2012 group, where a few of us have already begun stalking one another.

Anyone else have trouble viewing their financial aid info? The site said they hadn't received my FAFSA when I have a completed SAR from January sitting in my inbox and I've checked it half a dozen times. I sent an e-mail to the financial aid office and haven't heard back. I'm actually hoping I'm not the only one with this problem. :?

I'm about 99% set on living by myself. I figure that I will have plenty of opportunities to be social, but it's best to keep them on my own terms. I wouldn't mind being in one of those big apartment complexes with the communal barbeques and such though (as long as they let me have my dog).

I'm kind of leaning that way myself. It'll be a bit more expensive, but I think it will be worth not having any extra hassle.
I figure it will be an extra $100-200 a month, and I've had roommates before that I would have paid twice that for just a week away from. Don't want to chance anything messing up my grades.

I got the same email. I ended up having to call the finanical aid office to verify that they received my FAFSA. They punched in my info and said that they did, in fact, have my FAFSA after all. I would recommend calling. It seems to be the fastest way to get a response.
How long ago did this happen? Are you able to get on and view your financial aid award today?

I registered for their computing access stuff yesterday, so I don't think it is because I'm not registered. Although, it still asks for my ID number and DOB.

Re: housing in general, I've been looking for a place for me and my sig. other and since the law school is the only school at Davis on the semester system, its proving to be difficult to find a place for August. Everything opens up in September. Just a head's up that finding housing in Davis might be tougher than at least I first imagined.

Generally if you look on the Sacramento Craigslist and do a specific search for apartments in Davis, there is an awful lot to choose from. I plan to look to get into a place mid-July, which is when there are often the most open units and the best available deals on places in college towns.

Is anybody else still waiting to hear about the MLK public interest scholarship? The app says they may not notify until April 15th. With the April 15th seat deposit deadline that doesn't leave much time for decisions!

I think I got the email last Tuesday or Wednesday. I tried replying via email and got nothing in return so I tried to call on Friday only to find out they were closed for Cesar Chavez Day. I called back on Monday, got it all straightened out and was able to check out my financial aid offer online today.
The thing is-- I didn't get an e-mail. I just logged in and it said they don't have my FAFSA. I just spoke with Robin at Davis Law Financial Aid, and then I spoke with someone at FAFSA, and then I spoke with Robin again... and basically FAFSA says that Davis has the information, and Davis says that it does not. So, I'm in limbo?! I guess I should wait to send my first deposit until I can see a financial aid offer... this is frustrating.

Sorry to hear that. It sounds pretty similar to the situation that I was in, except that I got an email and they were able to find it with a little info over the phone. Hopefully this gets resolved for you soon.
I appreciate your sympathy. Robin said to check the website and if it still says that next Wednesday to call again.

And on to the never-ending discussion re: laptops: Mac or PC?

I have heard strong arguments for both. I'm a Mac person (I've seriously owned 1 PC my whole life, and that was not my idea... it was my dad's because I was 12...) but have never used bootcamp. Davis's site says that Vista and Microsoft Office are both available for free from the law school, so I won't have to buy the OS extra on top of the laptop, but I'm still hesitant about sinking $1500 into a machine that I could buy equivalent as a PC (in terms of processing speed, drive size, memory, graphics, etc.) for many hundreds cheaper. I've also had to get most of my mac laptops fixed (the harddrive always seems to fail-- on my ibook it failed three times!), and have had issues cooling both of my macs, which I think has led to them having shorter lifespans.

What is everyone else doing? Thoughts?

I'm taking my MacBook. I mean, you can get MS Office for Mac anyhow, so it's not like you need Windows.

I'm pretty sure we have to use exam software, hence my curiosity about bootcamp (see http://www.law.ucdavis.edu/faculty/info ... dents.html). My Powerbook G-4 (which is now over 3 years old) is a power pc, rather than intel-based, and so I've never seen bootcamp used and have no idea if it can run Windows as fast as a windows-based computer can.

Rumors abound re: OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, so I might try to wait and see if I can buy a new laptop in August with the new OS already installed. But perhaps this is wishful thinking.

You need a pc or a mac that can run a windows OS. The exam software runs strictly in a windows environment.

On the bright side, it's a good excuse to pick up that new MacBook you've had your eye on.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
