Nice pics
I don't see why some people call Hastings one of the ugliest law buildings. It seems nicely renovated to me.

How did you take pictures of it so empty?!
Does anyone have any pictures of a 1 bedroom in the tower? I've seen pics of an efficiency studio, and I've been in a studio (it was about 40% larger than the efficiency), but I'm really curious about the larger units.

I was just down at the Civic Center Courthouse right next to Hastings. The TL really isn't that bad, and that entire Civic Center Plaza is pretty gorgeous on days like today (70º's). As initially put off as I was about being so close to the TL Hastings is really on the very cusp, with the tower being the closest building to the bad stuff. The most unsavory characters we're likely to be surrounded by at hastings are the attorneys going to the courthouses.

It's like any other ASD. There are kids in pj's and flip flops as well as in suits. I wore jeans and a polo, that was fine.vb007 wrote:for those that went to the march admitted students day, what were people wearing? are jeans and a polo shirt ok or should i take some business casual clothes with me when i fly up next weekend?

Re: Hastings Class of 2012
Did anybody get a grant????
I didn't get anything. I am from a middle class background in Mississippi...my dad doesn't even have a college degree. He makes $20,000 a year. My parents' net worth is substantial but only because they bought a huge piece of land for dirt cheap in the early 80s. This makes me FURIOUS. My attendance at Hastings is in jeopardy.

i got a grant. i make pretty good money, but my parents' net worth is negative and they don't make a lot of money. i think this has more to do with being a ca resident, but i'm just guessing really. in case you haven't noticed, in-state tuition is relatively pretty high at uc schools. i think they use grants as a way to lower this and it still gives them flexibility to shaft the rich kids who are ca residents. sneaky bastards.

They don't make a residency determination until you fill out the application for CA residency. Until then, they assume you are out of state.leron wrote:i got a grant. i make pretty good money, but my parents' net worth is negative and they don't make a lot of money. i think this has more to do with being a ca resident, but i'm just guessing really. in case you haven't noticed, in-state tuition is relatively pretty high at uc schools. i think they use grants as a way to lower this and it still gives them flexibility to shaft the rich kids who are ca residents. sneaky bastards.
I am not rich. My parents have never earned over 100k in any year. This year their combined salary is about 75-80k. My parents are extremely frugal. I didn't have air conditioning until I was 7 years old...didn't get cable TV until i was 15. And now my parents are being stingy with helping me for law school. But I guess since they didn't take out mortgages they couldn't afford and don't have 30k in credit card debt, now I have to suffer.

true, but you do indicate your state of residence at various places (application, need access, fafsa iirc).
my parents didn't help me with undergrad tuition, nor will they be helping me out with law school. i don't really expect them to either.
no grant for you, sw?

No..no grant at all. Is there any way to appeal? I want to call the FinAid office but I figure it's better to settle down and think things through rather than make an ass of myself.leron wrote:true, but you do indicate your state of residence at various places (application, need access, fafsa iirc).

Re: Hastings Class of 2012
Just talked to a finaid officer. She claims that only people who have 'close to nothing' are eligible for grants. To this I replied, "So 75% of Hastings students have NO savings?" And she said, 'yes pretty much.' The average entering age is 24...that means there are a significant number of Hastings students with work experience. They have NO savings??? Really?
God this is bullshit.
Anyone with grants have any savings? I feel like such a moron. Why the hell did I save up for law school? I could have spent my 30k, applied to Hasting with 'NOTHING' and gotten 21-30k back in grants. WTF is with this country??? Saving is now a bad thing
For those who think I'm "privileged" I'm not. I've been working a shitty job making 39k a year. I was responsible enough to save in advance for law school.

Re: Hastings Class of 2012
You are better off having saved the 30K. I'm pretty sure that you can't get much more than around 10K (not sure exactly what the current max is) in the form of a Hastings Grant so you would not have received 21-30K back in grants for 1L. Need based financial aid grants only cover a portion of your needs - the rest is all subsidized and mostly non-subsidized loans. No one gets full tuition covered through need-based aid. That can only occur through merit-based scholarships. Look at the bright side - Use up all 30K during your 1L and then you will likely received the hastings grant for 2L.swheat wrote:Just talked to a finaid officer. Re: Hastings Class of 2012
That sounds like a good plan. But all the same, I could have bought a condo with my 30k and then gotten the 7-10k per year Hastings grant and been just as well off. For now, no condo and no grant.danconstan wrote:You are better off having saved the 30K.
