Re: Iowa 2012
I'm going with my Macbook Pro
Using Bootcamp to load vista for the exam software isn't a problem at all. It works identically to a windows laptop when windows is booted. Installing it is very easy and most schools sell the ultimate version through their software store for $15-20. I also don't get why everyone has problems with Vista, especially now after the updates. It is nowhere near as bad as people make it seem (unless you have a machine with subpar equipment, like low ram) but is still a far way from competing with OSX. As for the transition into a Mac from Windows, it's seamless. Part of what makes Macs so great is how intuitive it is to know how to use and master the operating system.
Crystal, good choice with the Lenovo though. IBM (Lenovo) and Alienware make the best windows laptops, IMO.
And the reputation/financial consequences are what made Iowa appealing to me.

Thanks for the feedback, all! I'm leaning Mac at this point...I've owned macs my whole life and have used pcs for work. Frankly I hate all the quirks and problems that plague PCs, and I'm glad it seems like it's not a huge deal to have to run bootcamp for the exam software. I've never had to work with bootcamp before; hopefully it's not too difficult to learn.

When is everyone moving? I know Whitty is moving very soon. I will be in Iowa City on August 1st.
We should have a sit down when everyone's arrives.

Technically I'm moving at the end of June, but really I'm just putting all my stuff in my new place. I'm then going to spend July with family and friends, then I'll be back in Iowa in August. I'd be in favor of a sit down!

Though I've yet to sign a lease, I expect to move in August 1st. As long as this "sit down" happens where food and/or beverages are served, I'm down. Also, I'm bringing my Macbook; we Macs will be fine.

Historically, a sit down should happen over Sicilian pastries and esspresso. We probably won't find the pastries. I guess we'll have to make due with beer and bar food.IpunchedCharlieRose wrote:Though I've yet to sign a lease, I expect to move in August 1st. Can't believe I haven't actually posted this yet, but it was brought to my attention by a kind poster that I should probably add myself to the enthusiastic U of I throng. Yay for Iowa 2012--see you all there!

I have just decided that I will be attending Iowa in the Fall. I am going to look for an apartment this weekend, and I hope the decent ones aren't all taken. It took me far too long to pick a school. I look forward to seeing everyone in August!

Worst case scenario: you might have to live in Coralville (5 minute drive from the law school - parking not included).mikella wrote:I have just decided that I will be attending Iowa in the Fall. Re: Iowa 2012
So, after my first week or so living in Iowa I've noticed a few things and I thought I would share them.
There is in fact a plethora of antiques, both living and stationary.
The thunderstorms are wicked awesome.
The bugs are HUGE.
There are smells out here like you would not believe, both sweet and sour.
Soft water and humidity make my hair poofy.
Squirrel!
I apparently have an accent and need to "eat a cheeseburger."
People don't lock their homes, cars, bikes etc..
When people know each other out here they wave, when they don't know someone..they wave.
Veeerrrrryyy interesting.

Welcome to Iowa little lady. Although I do recommend locking your bike up in IC. Stealing bikes seems to be a game for drunkies coming home from the bars.

I may or may not have an apartment for the fall now. Unrelatedly, I saw the giant sloth. It's my new favorite thing. I picked up some Hawkeye gear, too.

Did someone actually specify that it should be a cheeseburger? In Minnesota, people would tell you to eat a sandwich and allow you to decide what type.Whitty wrote:So, after my first week or so living in Iowa I've noticed a few things and I thought I would share them.

Re: Iowa 2012
Well, Hawkeyes and would-be-Hawkeyes, I just turned down my full scholarship to go to B.C. ($$). It's the right choice for me, but I do feel slightly guilty like I've let down Big Byrd (I'm sure he won't even notice!). So, if you want re-negotiate for more $$, or are on the waitlist with hopes of getting a bit of $ with your acceptance, there is hope. Sad I won't be joining you next year, but it seems like there will be a great class of 2012. Now hopefully it will be a bit cheaper for a few other people
