Snail mail, telepathy and carrier pigeon. I thought I saw a smoke signal but it turned out to be some steam from the Ford plant next to my apartment building.crystalhawkeye wrote:How were you notified, mikey? E-mail, snail mail, phone call? Telepathy? Smoke signal? Carrier pigeon?

Haters be damned.
I'll still owe $17,000/year for living expenses, books and hookers.

I'm heading to Iowa City this weekend to look for an apartment. I fear that the good ones are already taken.

IpCR what kind of apartment are you looking for? I toured almost 10 places when I was back there last month and I know of a few good places that still have apts available.IpunchedCharlieRose wrote:I'm heading to Iowa City this weekend to look for an apartment. I called Byrd to personally to express thanks for the scholarship.
The topic turned to schedules. He said we should know our schedules by late June or early July. Once we have schedules in hand, we can drop $1000 or so on books, not counting supplements.

That's going to be a change from about $150 a semester...mikeytwoshoes wrote:I called Byrd to personally to express thanks for the scholarship.

So once we get our financial aid award, there isn't anything to "accept" and all that, is there? It seems as if everything is all set as long as you aren't decreasing your loan amounts, haven't completed loan counseling or haven't signed a promissory note before...
As for books, will we be able to get them online or is this the type of thing where we are going to have to get them from the bookstore (who someone once said only accepts cash)?

The scholarship letter said you have to email them to accept within two weeks of the date on the letter. You also have to sign a new promissory note.rainmaker614 wrote:So once we get our financial aid award, there isn't anything to "accept" and all that, is there? They are like any other book. You should be able to buy them online. I did not go into the law bookstore but I happened past an undergrad bookstore and they took credit cards.

Re: Iowa 2012
I don't think we have to sign a new promissory note if we borrowed during undergrad (assuming you are only using Stafford loans in both law and undergrad). I haven't signed a new one and ISIS says all is well...
On a side note, is it just me or is the salary information on the law website much different than it used to be? The average salary now (c/o 2008) for private practice is 102k and for business is 128k.... that's pretty damn impressive. I think it used to be something like 78k.

Those numbers are not real. Do not believe anything put out by that office. In light of what's been happening in the overall economy, not to mention the body blows to the legal profession, there is no way in hell that those number are an accurate reflection of reality.

Honestly, quit trolling both of you. getting 100 k out of Iowa is not unrealistic, but it is also by no means a sure fire deal. Most big law firms start out at around 120 k. Many IHC start at around 85 k. Many Iowa grads go to MSP, KC, Oklahoma City, Des Moines and the like, and (Shock) do not have an enormously difficult time getting a job given a good economy.
Perhaps it is because Iowa is reputable around the midwest, is in the T 25/26, and it a well respected school. SO NOVEL! God your bitching a is unbelievably annoying.
Hoosier, this is directed mostly toward Westside, so don't take it to heart so much, k?
EDIT: Nice try and removal Hoosier. Sorry it got on the board before you deleted it. I know you mean well though. Westside is another story.

Porter comments on credit agreements (Yahoo News, May 1)
Building on the plain-language breakthrough, state and federal lawmakers approved disclosure laws intended to provide consumers with more information about their credit arrangements. But some companies responded by reviving lengthy and confusing credit agreements, notes KATHERINE PORTER, a law professor at the University of Iowa. "The more things we make (companies) say, the more places they have to hide stuff," she argues. The article originally appeared in BUSINESSWEEK ONLINE.

Redlawsk comments on gay marriage (Edge Boston, April 30)
The Des Moines Register noted in an April 5 article that because nearby states do not offer legal acceptance of gay and lesbian families, Iowa may become an oasis for younger people, who polls show are much more supportive of marriage equality than are older Americans . . . and that could translate into a welcome flow of tourist dollars and a bigger tax base. The arrival of marriage equality "makes Iowa overall a more welcoming state," DAVID REDLAWSK, a political scientist with the University of Iowa, was quoted as saying. "That's a good thing from the standpoint of businesses who, frankly, are concerned about quality of life issues for their employees." http://www.edgeboston.com/index.php?ch= ... =&id=90586

Re: Iowa 2012
Just got back from Iowa City this afternoon, and I finally got around to finding an apartment. I'm going with Old Gold. I turned in the rental application today and will hopefully have a lease signed too. I'm really excited about living there. Good price, amazing location (nice area, and it's an easy walk to the law school, Kinnick, and, to a lesser extent, Carver), and I liked the manager quite a bit. I think someone else in this thread said earlier that they'd be living there too, so that's cool.

Most of the apartment companies in my undergrad college town didn't do credit checks for students of the university. Are apartment complexes in IC like this? If so, are they pretty decent places to live, and which ones?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
