Jeez, share the love UT. No scholly $$ here, but that's okay. Hook 'em horns! With that said, if anybody wants to throw some of their own award $$ at me, that'd be lovely. I have a slight drinking problem and I'm not 100% sure my financial aid will cover it.

Sorry. Can't throw what I got your way. But I will escort you to AA meetings (if you'd like).

Surely alcohol is covered under the "board" part of Room/Board....

When you say you have a "slight drinking problem" do you mean simply that you spend too much money on drinks when you go out, or do you mean that you are a filthy drunkard who is always at the bottom of a bottle no matter where he is and what he is doing?

Hello~

I have a couple of questions about apartment/finding leasing in Austin. I've already created a thread in the "Discuss You Law School" section of the message board, so I'd be grateful if you guys could go take a gander...and respond if you'd like.

Thank you...and...um...hook 'em?

Does anyone know how season football tickets work for students? Do they have a student lottery like a lot of other large schools do?

Season tickets are given out at the beginning of the year for home games. Certain games (such as the OU game) are lottery based. I'm pretty sure that's how it works. Also, the LASP includes all sports, so it's a pretty good deal.

The way the LASP works (at least when I was in undergrad) you have to show up at the box office every week and wait for your ticket. You do, however, get one free ticket to any game (except the big ones like OU and A&M) if you can wait in line for it. It's been a few years since I had the LASP, so it might have changed, but that's the way it was in like 2003.

Different now. At some point during the summer you will receive an email with information on how to purchase season tickets (assuming you buy LASP). Where you sit is determined by seniority - sort of. It goes in this order: seniors, grad students, juniors, sophomores, and freshman. You print your tickets out online.

My question is how do we as incoming 1Ls purchase the LASP? As an undergrad you buy it when you are registering.

Huh. I don't know. I would think they would send the email to all 1Ls talking about LASP and giving them the option to buy it. Then again, that would be logical.

They'll send you an email before the semester starts.

The way it works is you can buy a LASP. With that you can go to the lottery draw for tickets every home game. The much better option, though, is to buy the LASP and the season tickets for football. With both of those you have a guaranteed seat every home game with print at home tickets. The away and OU games will also be there for you to buy individually.

Once it gets closer to the start of the semester one of us will start a law school group for season tickets and pass the info on to ya'll. When you're buying your season tickets you'll be given the option to join a group so that everyone can sit together. The other perk of the group is that the bigger it is, the better the seats get. They figure big groups will show up and cheer harder. But the group is classified by the lowest student in the group, so a group with 50 seniors and one freshman is classified as a freshman group and they will draw last. The law school is always a big group and we're all grad students so we're 2nd in the draw. As you can imagine, this means we get awesome seats every year. My advice would be to spring for the season tickets. Even if you don't think you'll go to every home game, it's not hard to find somebody else at school that would like to and it's easy to sell & transfer your tickets to them.

I hope you guys are brushing up on your cheers and fight songs.

Just thought I would check in on everyone to see how the apartment search is going. I think I'm going to get a place up on Mopac, about 7 miles from the law school. Is anyone else living in that area? I heard it's an easy commute, quiet, and a lot cheaper than and nicer than some of the places closer to campus.

Everyone should definitely head to Dallas for the OU game in October. I never realized how much I loved UT until I got to Dallas and argued endlessly with the OU fans. Some of my greatest college memories were from my trips out there for the game. Also, you can get tickets really cheap on Craigslist. Many undergraduates get tickets for OU just to make a profit (they get them for like 90 bucks), and I haven't had any problems getting great seats for about 200. Last year, we bought 4 tickets on the 10 yard line 5 rows up for only 700.

I hope all of you have a great time during your 3 years in Austin. I've lived out here since my freshman year in 2000, but will be moving for law school in the fall. It is a great city, and I definitely have loved my time here. I'll still go to at least one home game at DKR, and there is a 1000% chance I'll be in Dallas for the OU Game.

If you are describing the Far West area, which I think you are, then I am living there. It is fairly cheap and quite nice, but MoPac is a parking lot in the mornings. Make sure your place is within walking distance of the UT shuttle, which does a loop around Far West Blvd on Wood Hollow, North Hills, Hart Lane, and Greystone. Then you can get on the bus and let the bus driver do the sitting in traffic for you. The bus ride takes about 25 minutes in rush hour, plus 5 minutes for walking to the Law School.

I'll be living off Far West as well, in Oak Ridge Apts, really close to the kosher HEB.

Esc, have you lived out there before, or will you just be moving out there for law school? My current roommate's fiance lives out there right now and recommended the area to me. I'm just excited that I was able to get a unit right on the edge of a ridge with a kick ass view of the hills.

I guess I shouldn't have said where I'll be living... I'll have to be careful to avoid making an ass out of myself now.... some of the people on TLS are pretty hardcore.....

I live pretty far NW (out of Austin City Limits) and I'm staying there because of my husband's work. I'll take the Express bus in the mornings. It will take forever, but it's got WiFi and it's better than driving it myself.

Anyway, the point of bringing that up is that I currently take MoPac into work Downtown every morning. I could just as easily take 35, but I find MoPac to be slightly less of a parking lot most mornings, though that might depend on the time of day. MoPac really isn't bad. Of course, if possible you should all take the bus. It saves on money and gas. Cap Metro is free to UT students.

UT for sure. They bumped me up to the Chancellors scholarship so I withdrew from NYU on Friday. That made it an easy decision.

Thanks guys!

Also, I plan on moving to Austin during the first week of August so I can get situated, find my favorite coffee shop, relax for a couple weeks, etc. We should create a list of TLSers who would like to get together before school starts. Let me know if anyone is interested.

I'm game for a TLS meetup a week or two before school starts. Sounds fun. Congrats on the Chancellor's!

SSDD, I live in Austin right now, and quite close to Oak Ridge (I won't say my place's name on TLS). The HEB there is pretty good, although I haven't sampled the Kosher section.

How does everyone feel about the idea of keeping this thread going so we can post our sections and discuss classes and shit when school starts?

Sounds good to me. It would be cool to end up with at least one TLS poster in my section.

We'll be arriving in Austin by August 1st. I say yes to TLS meetups, keeping this thread alive, drunken benders, and the like.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
