Madam Mam's is my favorite Thai place. Although I do have to disagree with you on their Pad Thai; not only do I not love it, I plain dislike it. But nothing else on their menu has disappointed me, and almost everything I've had is fantastic.

These are my favorite dishes:

P8 Pad Ped Ga-Prao: stir-fried ground meat with mushrooms, Thai pepper, and Thai basil. It's relatively spicy, sometimes more so than others.

P16 Pad Cha Catfish: catfish stir-fried with bamboo shoots, mushrooms, and Thai basil. It's very spicy.

P22 Pad Prik Khing: stir-fried green beans. Not that spicy.

P31 Amazing Green Beans: stir-fried green beans. These are very spicy. Completely different dish than P22.

If I want Pad Thai, I go to Thai Kitchen, which is further up Guadalupe. At 30th or so.
Madam Ma'ams Padh Thai is not the best I've had. I thought it was pretty bare when the server brought it out. So, I ordered Chinese Broccoli and a side of peanut sauce; that helped a lot. I'll have to try Thai Kitchen VERY SOON.

I had crappy luck for a while with Thai food in Austin until I found Thai Tara, one of the better Thai places I've eaten at. It's down on west 6th and Nueces, near the Molotov and Opal Devine's clubs. Thai Passion is another decent place, which has a couple locations around town, including one at 7th and Congress, but I don't really care for their food that much.

Spiderhouse's coffee is pretty good. For those of y'all up in the Far West area, Russell's at Hancock and Balcones sells excellent coffee and pastries, as well as good sandwiches. I haven't been to too many coffeehouses in Austin since I have my own espresso maker and tend to make my own lattes and espresso shots, but in general, Austin coffeehouses tend to serve some pretty damn good, strong coffee.

Zen at 35th and Guadalupe sells eminently decent, cheap, healthy Japanese food. its not fine dining but it certainly allows for a great meal for only a couple bucks more than a crappy burger with fries.

I really liked Thai Passion, but it's too far for me to go there regularly. I've only been once. I live way NW and don't really make it downtown for dinner much.

Can't help with coffee. I'm off caffeine.

Austin food, this I can do (by the way, everyone should buy an Austin go local card, the $10 it costs is easily made back with many local places taking 10% off for having the card).

Coffee: there's a great, relatively new 24hr coffee shop 1.4 miles from the law school on E MLK called Bennu. Good coffee and they bring in tacos from torchy's (a good thing). It also happens to be 50 ft from my front door (the condos right behind it).

Mexican: my favorites are Maudie's (but only the one on lake austin blvd, it's much better than the others), Curra's off Oltorf near St Ed's U, and Sázon off South Lamar. Also, Nuevo Leon on E 6th is pretty good

Breakfast Taco's (it's own category in ATX): Juan in a Million on Cesar Chavez (east side) for a giant, 3lb Don Juan (featured on man v food), Taco Deli on Spyglass Road or Screaming Goat near Lamar

Thai: Thai Tara was already mentioned, very solid. Thai Passion is not as good but there are a couple locations. There's also a place in the new Mueller airport development at 51st and I35 with decent Thai food and HUGE portions (at least 2 meals worth).

Chinese: yet to find and decent chinese in Austin after 4 years

Burgers: Huts is fun on Buy 1 get 1 Wed, but not amazing aside from their toppings. Casino El Camino is a real winner (on 6th). Also, McCormick and Schmick has a very servicable $2.95 cheeseburger and fries during HH. And for fast food, P Terry's and Player's are pretty good.

Others:
-Best place that seems more expensive than it is: Chez Nous off 6th. Great french food and they have a 3 course $25 fixed price menu.
-Best Queso: Kerbey Lane, Magnolia Cafe or Torchy's (also has good tacos)
-Tons of random stuff that's all good: Whole Foods on Lamar. The flagship wholefoods is definitely FTW. If you get their 2 tacos for $5 you'll be full for a day and a half.

Also, not exactly a restaurant, but the food at alamo drafthouse movie theater is pretty good. It's also a great place to see a movie, I haven't been to an AMC for ages now

Anybody have Sokolow? In his message for our first day assignments, he mentions picking up materials from the sales office? What's this sales office? And he says to pick up his supplement material "Commercial and Debtor-Creditor Law: Selected Statutes (Foundation Press 2009)"... is this in addition to the other supplement that's listed in the book list?

No laptops = awful time.

Sales Office = below atrium area. There is a door they open up and sell stuff from there.

I have Sokolow and I have the same questions. I'm assuming the "Commercial and Debtor-Creditor Law" is in addition to the other supplement, but I might wait until orientation to buy it, just in case. Have you found the syllabi for Mullenix or Blais yet?

Pizza is either mellow mushroom or slices and ices, both on the drag. Also mangia was voted as having the best Chicago deepdish outside of Chicago.

No laptops. FML. I can't take notes by hand. I can't even read my handwriting any more.

EDIT: I'm going to waste so much ink and paper on this class. She puts documents on BB that you need to take to the next class, but you can't use your laptop.

No, I haven't yet. I'm assuming they will be posted on Blackboard. I'll let you know if I find something soon.

i seriously think we're going to have to set up a class notes taking collective for section 4, or at least 4d .... 2 of 4 classes do not allow laptops. unbelievable. i wonder if we're going to go 3 for 3 when torres posts his property syllabus.

Perry is my Con Law prof for 4b; I do think it looks like frequent note sharing will be the order of the day.

This no-laptop policy is such a huge disappointment. I've been spending the last couple years transitioning my note-taking onto the computer, and I specially went out to buy OneNote so I wouldn't have to buy and lug around any notebooks or pens. I HATE having to carry lots of notebooks around.

Am I correct in assuming that we will still type our exams? I can't imagine that they would force us to do exams by hand, but am I being overly optimistic?

+1

Also, are Laurin's BB assignments actually posted yet? I have the link for the syllabus, but I can't find the link for her assignments anywhere.

Hooray for making another run to the Co-Op this evenin' to pick up the TX Penal Code.

On an unrelated note, I have a question for the food experts of Austin, Texas: Does anyone know of a good place to go for cajun food? When I say cajun, I'm talking low end: crawfish, boudain, gumbo, alligator, catfish etc.

The only place I've found so far is Shoal Creek Saloon on N. Lamar, which has pretty good specials and pretty good duck gumbo.

I appreciate it folks.

The assignments are up under course documents or something like that on BB.

If you don't mind the chain feel of it, there's a brand new Razzoo's by the IKEA in Round Rock. It's nice because it's cheap. I went to a pretty expensive Cajun place in Round Rock once called Gumbo's. It was good, but I'm not sure it's worth the money.

Is anybody buying a laptop with financial aid money once we get it? If I submit the reimbursement form after funds have been dispersed, will I have to wait until next semester to get that money back?

Sambet's off Research/183. Evangelines down south is loved by some, but I wasn't impressed (mom's family is cajun so I've longed for a decent gumbo place).

Not looking forward to taking notes by hand
