Raz14 wrote:Does anyone know how need-based scholarships work when you have a merit based scholarship? Are they just added on in addition independently of the amount of your merit based scholarship or are they only added if merit doesn't cover need, etc.?
I think merit aid is awarded first, then it's taken into account in any need-based calculations. Depending on the size of your award, the school may say that because the merit scholarship covers such a large portion of the tuition, you no longer qualify for need-based grants.

i'm sure they're counting on people splitting with northwestern - probably not a bad idea to get an extra few days in tho - i just hope the panel thing with nussbaum and leiter isn't on saturday, because that was the day i was planning on being at northwestern

I'm hoping the time spent at Northwestern can be just as illuminating if I attend at some point that is not on the official visitation calendar. To be honest, I feel like UChi aligns better with what I want out of a law school, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of my sole consideration for the entirety of its ASW. Northwestern is interesting to me in such a way that it may be able to capitalize on during an individual visit just as well as during an organized visit. I too am interested in seeing Leiter and Nussbaum in action. Philosophy and Law may end up being a draw on par, intellectually, with law and economics, and perhaps more universally applicable in the sense that it does not require (or even suggest) a particualar worldview in order to be salient to one's studies and one's goals...

haven't yet but i'm considering the most tactful way (and the best offers to show them)
That's my biggest problem... leverage. I only applied to T6 and UVa. I should have thrown in Penn, Michigan, Berkeley or maybe even Duke just to see if I could get money to leverage schools I actually want to go to.
Yes, I made this same mistake (though slightly different set of schools). I even got fee waivers from several that I did not use. Stupid stupid me...

Here's what I've done; hope it helps:

January was a rough month for me as I got YPed at Mich, Penn, and Northwestern with no better offers on the table. Then I got into UChi and immediately sent out withdrawals. I got 11K/year at Chicago, but was hoping for a little more. Georgetown was the only other T14 I was in at and I got a pretty weak 7.5K/year so I withdrew there. So I'm in a pretty similar situation in that I have no scholarship leverage. I did find out Friday that I improved my LSAT from 172 to 173, though.

So today I e-mailed Sarah Arimoto-Mercer and asked if I could talk to someone about a scholarship increase. I told her about my LSAT improvement and I even offered to withdraw from all other competing schools (no decision at Columbia or Harvard yet) if I got a substantial offer (I was thinking 20K/year). She e-mailed me back saying they would be reconsidering all scholarships after the ASW in April.

First: Epstein is keeping the schedule he's kept for years. Namely, fall quarter at NYU, the latter two at Chicago. When he quits teaching the majority of the year at Chicago, he'll be fully retired and assume an emeritus position at NYU [no gain to NYU].

Secondly, here's a new report by Leiter on faculty citation rankings: http://www.leiterrankings.com/faculty/2 ... pact.shtml

What I would notice is that only one of our top 10 most-cited faculty members is above the age of 70, Richard Posner isn't counted, and Richard Epstein's citations are cut in (presumably) half to reflect his time-splitting with NYU.

What I can say is, of those 10 professors, you can take a class with any of them besides Geoffrey Stone, Nussbaum, or Landes your first year. I'll have taken classes with 6 of them by the end of the year (my elective will be between Posner/Epstein/Leiter). Another thing is that my Civ Pro II class is being taught by Diane Wood, one of the Circuit Court of Appeals Judges for the 7th Circuit, and one of the hot names for the next Supreme Court (of the current 15 7th Circuit judges, 3 teach here -- Posner, Easterbrook, and Wood).

This entire info-dump is, I think, one of the coolest and most unique things about Chicago. We have big celebrity professors, small classes, and you're taking classes with them right off the bat. And Chicago is still noted for hiring brilliant young professors at the beginning of their career, so every other professor I've had is a current or up-and-coming star (whether they choose to move to Harvard or stay here -- quite a few of the young professors have outstanding offers).

And uh, the student body myth is a bunch of BS. At least for my year it is -- especially compared to a lot of the other top schools. The ASW will be fun.

Is anyone else having trouble finding a lender for the Stafford/PLUS loans? Each time I have tried to apply with Discover or CitiBank I run into some kind of problem with the school code. There seems to be confusion b/w the code for the law school and the general undergrad. Has anyone found a lender and not run into this problem? I'm so frustrated at this point I'm willing to just find a new lender altogether.

Hi guys,

I'm flying into the O'Hara airport on Thursday night, April 2nd, and leaving Sunday, April 5th, early in the morning. Would anyone like to share cab to the school? :)

Hey all future classmates, I was wondering if any of you are considering living at Regents Park...I really want to live there, but I need a roomate. If anyone is looking for a roomate at Regents shoot me a message and we can discuss it. I think its about 780/month per person for 2bed 2 bath.

Do you think it's possible to get an exstension on the $500. I am a little short on cash.

Sarah Arimoto-Mercer would be the person to talk to.

I got two e-mails today at 1:38 pm. One said they received my deposit and the other said they reconsidered my scholarship and I got nothing. I may have been able to play it better, but I really didn't have any other serious options and I'm happy to be headed to Chicago in September.
