I got a lil greedy, so I sent NYU's 65K offer, and got a big NO in 2 days. I don't think they feel the need to be as flexible as other schools.
So weird that Chicago didn't give you any money... they are usually the most generous of CCN.

But great job on CLS and NYU!
I tried with 25K at NYU, and got the same response. Disappointing, but oh well.
Damn. How quick did they get back to you the second time around?

this is probably a silly question, but to those of you who have grants, is there anything else you have to do besides put down a seat deposit in order to receive them from Columbia?

I didn't do anything other than enroll.

I just bit the bullet...submitted my seat deposit despite the fact that Columbia wouldn't match any of my merit scholarships and gave me absolutely $0 in grants. Oh well. By the time we graduate the economy will probably revert to some sort of bartering system with rocks and shiny stones.

See you all next year.

Has anyone else not received their financial aid offer yet? I didn't want to call the financial aid office to ask about it if they were still in the process of sending them out, but it seems like everyone on here has gotten it, so I'm thinking it's probably time to call and check.

I called them like six times so I could have some type of financial aid decision by the time my scholarship expired at NYU. I think they were finally just like "screw it" and gave me nothing to provide me some type of answer.

I haven't gotten mine yet, but I called their office yesterday out of general impatience and they say it got mailed on Tuesday... meaning it should arrive today! Not sure whether it was a good idea to find that out, since now I'm tempted to just skip everything today and wait for the mailman. Sigh.

Come on Columbs, I'll take anything. Seriously, give me five hundred dollars (cover my deposit?) and I'll commit immediately.

Who am I kidding, I'd go anyway.

Anybody seen the contract for UAH?

do you rent on a monthly basis or is it a 9 month commitment?

If it is a nine month thing and you sign it and then pull out in middle must you pay for the remainder of the months that you did not use?

Thanks!

It's a twelve month lease, but apparently it's really easy to find summer subletters if you aren't staying in New York.

I thought it was only 9 months unless you wanted to keep it the following year?

Sorry, you're right. I just read the housing FAQs.
When do I renew my lease or contract?

All student leases and student housing contracts, with the exception of those in International House and Union Theological Seminary (UTS) terminate on May 31st of each year.

Students who are eligible and wish to remain in UAH for the following academic year are required to extend the lease or contract (with a standardized rent increase) and are held responsible for rent payments over the summer months.

Lease renewal forms will be sent in April or early May. Information on renewing your contract will be sent to you in March or April.

Thanks guys but what I was asking is...

Say you take the lease and then a month after living there you find cheaper housing on your own and you want to move out of the lease and into the cheaper option....

So what happens to the other 8 months of rent you owe? Do they just not charge? Are they penalties? Must you pay for them?

That was a good question - I was curious myself, so I just looked it up:
Will I lose my deposit if I break my lease or contract?

Leases and contracts may be broken without penalty for the following reasons:

* You are graduating
* Your affiliation is expiring
* You will be taking an approved leave of absence
* You will be transferring to another UAH accommodation
* Your lease or contract is expiring

If you are vacating for any other reason, contact the UAH office to determine if any charges/penalties apply.
But, in thinking about it - the hassle of moving after a month seems like it'll be way more horrid than any savings, even if the penalties aren't so bad.

I would assume that, like any apartment in New York, you would owe the 8 months rent - a lease is a contract. You should call and ask if you can sublet. Otherwise, I don't see why you wouldn't just look for your own non-UAH apartment in the first place.

EDIT: Also, you're totally not going to have time to look around for housing while you're in school. I would suggest you start looking ASAP.

Yeah, you're definitely going to be on the hook for the rent. If you want a cheaper place I would suggest just looking at CL NYC. There are plenty of good valued apartments in that area, especially in this economy, I am not ever planning on leaving mine, despite the fact that it's not terribly convenient to Columbia (moving is a big pain in the ass). Either way, I'd be very surprised if they let you out of your lease to get another apartment as it's even less likely they can fill an apartment once you leave.

For people who have already accepted, do you have your Columbia law email yet? I just made my Columbia email (the one with the numbers). When will we be able to get the law email address?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
