You don't need to front it. You can request a cash advance.AZJenna wrote:I want to take advantage of this loan, but $2000 is still a lot to front until September, given that my last paycheck was in May (teaching = big paycheck at the beginning of summer that has to last 2 months).

Re: Harvard Class of 2012
OK, I thought I was going insane! I went to look up the information yesterday and saw it said $2000 and wondered whereTF I got $3K from. $2K is not enough to cover the laptop+printer+appropriate accessories. Bad form, HLSObjection wrote:HLS decreased the max amount of our computer reimbursement from $3,000 to $2,000.
Awesome! Good way to save money. Lord knows how cash-strapped HLS is
Edit: Actually, they're not saving money. The computer reimbursement is a loan, not a grant. They simply increase our budget by that amount and allow us to take out an additional loan. So, WTF would they decrease our allowance for?

You can buy an HP laser printer and one of the HLS Lenovos for under 2k. What other accessories do you need?

Re: Harvard Class of 2012
All this talk of computers reminded me that I have to send my off to get its warranty work done. I'm convinced that the power-outlets in the UK fried my battery, although my Dad said that's impossible. All I know is that when I went on study abroad a couple years ago, I came back with my battery lasting 10 minutes. When I left in January, my battery lasted 3 hours, now it lasts about 5 minutes. I decided to wait to send it in until I got back from Kuwait, because I figured that my battery would get fried again there...so now it's time to get it all done. I'm jealous that everyone is buying new computers, I just couldn't justify it when mine hasn't died quite yet.

Re: Harvard Class of 2012
1. I don't like that they're forcing my computer to be a PC, which is essentially what they're doing by lowering the budget allowance.jrs12 wrote:You can buy an HP laser printer and one of the HLS Lenovos for under 2k. What other accessories do you need?
2. Computer, printer, quality backpack (Tom Bihn Brain, for example), external hard drive, router, warranty, software, computer lock, carrying case, ink. $3k would have allowed me to just barely buy all of the above (that's also factoring in an SSD, which is more of a luxury purchase but would be nice to have; if buying a new computer, why buy old technology?).
3. I don't fully understand why the amount was lowered. These aren't grants - they're loans. As I understand it, they simply authorize the budget increase. They don't actually pay anything.

While all this talk of printers and shit is fascinating, I have an unrelated question. Does anyone understand precisely how our schedule works, with the mini-term in the middle and all?

Re: Harvard Class of 2012
They probably have the 3k limit so that people aren't buying gaming systems that are far more than they need for law school. I really can't imagine what kind of computing equipment you could need for law school that you couldn't get for under 2k.
You don't need to buy software. It's included. Routers are really cheap when you sign a broadband contract. If you're in the dorms you don't need one. $200 backpacks are definitely luxury items. External drives are cheap. A laser printer will come with a cartridge, and you will probably not have to replace it for years. SSD drive is definitely a luxury item, and totally unnecessary for law school applications. You won't need the warranty, as they'll be fully supported by HLS IT services.
Lenovo T Series: $1077
HP P1006 Laser Printer: $190
Seagate 320 gb HD: $90
-------------------------------
= $1357
Plenty of money left over for a Brain Bag.
If you get a Gateway or something cheap, then you could really get great specs and accessories.
If you prefer an Apple, it's still just $130 more for a Macbook Pro.

Re: Harvard Class of 2012
1. I prefer Macs. I can come up with some ethical spiel about why I prefer Macs, or I could just be honest and say I prefer Macs because I'm more familiar with them, they are more versatile, and more stable. I don't want a PC.jrs12 wrote:They probably have the 3k limit so that people aren't buying gaming systems that are far more than they need for law school. 2. The 3k is not a grant. We are adults. It is somewhat...odd...for them to get mad at what kind of computers we are buying with money we are being loaned and have to pay back. If they're trying to teach fiscal responsibility, how about finding a way to keep us from going $200,000k into debt, rather than saving us an extra $1,000 on computer loans?
SSD drives are much less prone to failure than HDDs. I don't know if you've ever had a hard drive fail with data on it, but it's not fun. Yes, you can get an external HDD and back stuff up...but again, bad experiences. Give me the newer, faster, and more stable product.$200 backpacks are definitely luxury items. External drives are cheap. A laser printer will come with a cartridge, and you will probably not have to replace it for years. SSD drive is definitely a luxury item, and totally unnecessary for law school applications.
And who cares whether or not they're luxury items? The budget specifically covers them, and they could easily be bought under the previous $3,000 loan. Again, I don't see why the decrease was warranted. If we wanted to save ourselves $1,000 and buy as little and as cheaply as possible, we are adults and could have elected to do so. If we wanted to "stupidly" spend up to the maximum, why not let us?
Oh come on. Have you ever dealt with school IT departments? You won't need the warranty, as they'll be fully supported by HLS IT services.
Furthermore, what if you have an actual hardware failure? Is IT going to pay for the replacement part?
I get what you're saying. The budget is do-able, for sure. But there seems to be no reason for the allowance decrease, and that's what annoys me the most.

As I understand it, after fall semester, we take one class intensive for like 3 weeks or so (take our final on Sat. nonetheless), then start spring.excelsiorcaelo wrote:While all this talk of printers and shit is fascinating, I have an unrelated question. Re: Harvard Class of 2012
This is what my 1L contact said about scheduling:
As far as winter session, as I understand it, 1L winter is when we take the problem solving course. Here's what my fall and spring schedules looked like:
Fall '08
- Contracts (3 classes per week, 1:15 duration each)
- Civil Procedure (2 classes per week, 2:00 duration each)
- Legislation & Regulation (3 classes per week, 1:15 duration each)
- Torts (3 classes per week, 1:30 duration each)
- Legal Research & Writing (1 class per week, 2:00 duration each)
Spring '08
- Criminal Law (3 classes per week, 1:15 duration each)
- Property (3 classes per week, 1:15 duration each)
- Constitution and the Int'l Order (2 classes per week, 2:00 duration each)
- Negotiation Workshop (2 classes per week, 4:10 duration each - intense elective, but pretty awesome)
- Legal Research & Writing (1 class per week, 2:00 duration each - though toward the end of the semester, you're basically just working on your brief and classes don't meet)
Your first semester is totally set; you take your international elective and your other elective spring semester. Hope that answers your questions!

The reading group is in the spring? I thought it was in the fall as a "get to know ppl and profs" thing.mallard wrote:And in the spring, we have an elective and a "1L reading group," right?
Also, the 1L reading group is no credit, right?

I think reading groups are in the Fall, and I didn't think they were mandatory...
http://www.law.harvard.edu/news/2004/09/23_reading.htmlThese are optional, non-graded, 5-10 student groups meeting informally with faculty members–often at faculty member homes.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, guys. So two electives in the spring, one of which must be international law-related?
We'll have more 1L classes than previous HLS kids because of this problem-solving thing.

Yeah, that's right. However, I believe its not just "pick an international law" class; you have to select from a class of five or so.mallard wrote:Thanks for clearing that up for me, guys. So two electives in the spring, one of which must be international law-related?
