Only took like an hour or 2 to prepare for that if I recall, wasn't that bad. So it's really no different from reading to be prepared for a normal cold call.

Looks like capacity for the 1L class is set up at 384 (12 sections of LRW w/ capacity of 32 students per). Hoping they didn't overenroll that badly.

On a side note, are 1Ls allowed to take January term classes? The Baseball class taught by Professor Setear looks/sounds interesting.

384??? Aren't they supposed to aim for 360?

Makes me glad I contacted them in March about my application, otherwise I'd be on the waitlist, hoping for 25 people to follow in the footsteps of Marcus Epstein before classes start.

I did the same thing in February regarding my application...Thank God.

Just wondering, what does this mean? Was there a mistake or something or do you think that showing the extra level of interest is what got you into the admit pile?

The classes were set up the same way last year and we only had 370 so I think 384 is just the maximum not the expected enrollment.

1Ls are allowed to take J-term classes.

Class 26 (Oct. 22, 2009) Summary Judgment Practice

Additional
Assignment: Two students will be randomly selected to argue the summary judgment motion in the Garvin v. Camelot Care Centers case. Students with last names beginning A-M should be prepared to argue the motion on behalf of the Defendant, and students with last names beginning N-Z should be prepared to respond to the motion on behalf of the Plaintiff. All students should be prepared to argue the motion; no passes accepted for this assignment.
I'm not sure if that sounds awesome or terrible, lol
That sounds really, really scary.

Agreed! I'm definitely going to have a few hilariously obvious moments of fail in those types of situations.

Well, I can't say anything for certain, but I went complete the first week of October and didn't hear anything at all through late February. Then I contacted them to express my interest and that I really wanted to go to UVA, and I was admitted the next day. It could be coincidence, but probably not.

Somebody should be a gunner and volunteer to do it.

"Excuse me professor, I've actuallty prepared both sides of the argument last night and am prepared to argue myself for the benefit of the class." Oh yes, it must happen.

For anyone who ordered a mac bundle from Cavalier Computers, I spoke with them today and they are scheduled for delivery on Monday, July 27th. I had marked early pickup on my order and the guy told me I can come get it on Tuesday, the 28th. Yay for new toys!

Fixed.
I scored 180 last week on a practice test and I plan on letting everyone, including professors, know about it.

You could always just save your breath and get t-shirts made?
No. That might lessen the joy of butting into ongoing conversations about other topics to say "Were y'all talking about the LSAT? zOMG I pwned it - 180*!"

* = on a practice test

At ASW I stuck my hand up during the mock class and got pwned by the prof. Afterward, I had three or four other people in there tell me they were amazed I had the balls to stick my hand up and volunteer to get slapped like that.

It left me with the impression that class is actually going to be kind of easy in a way. No matter what happens, I'm gonna be surrounded by people who are like, "Wow, you actually tried to give an answer! Good job!"

They were flooded with applications so they were remaining silent on a bunch. I sent them an e-mail asking for a decision since I had a scholarship with an upcoming deadline at another school, but that UVA was my first choice. Next day I got accepted, and over the phone I was told that the class was "basically full." This was in early March.

I've been on a TLS hiatus for a while now but I'm hoping some incoming and current Cavaliers can answer these stupid questions for me.

Do we get to pick our professors/class times (or even what semester we take the class)?

Why aren't class times evenly distributed? I noticed some classes meet 3 times a week for an hour while some meet 4 times for 50 minutes.

Which classes are 1 semester and which are year-long?

Do we decide when we take exams?

Thanks all!

Professors and class times are assigned by section. You'll be assigned a section, which will have all of its class times and professors assigned to it. Everything is fixed for your first year. After your first year you basically get to pick whatever you want for your last two years for the most part.

I would assume class times are different based on the professor's needs and availability.

the final exam schedule is in an information packet you should have received by now. Exam dates/times are already fixed. Here's the info I have:

Contracts: Dec 7, 8:30am
Crim Law: Dec 10, 8:30am
Torts: Dec 14, 8:30am
Civ Pro: Dec 17, 8:30am

These four classes and your pass/fail Legal Writing course should be your first-semester courses. I believe there are two semesters of Legal Writing, but otherwise I don't personally know if there are any second-semester continuations of the above classes.

1. No, not for the seven 1L required courses

2. This depends on the number of credits the course is worth--for the first semester, two are four credits, two are three credits, and one is one credit--and on the scheduling preference of the professor. Also, I'm sure the school doesn't want to make the section schedules too erratic.

3. All are one-semester long except for the LRW course, which is one-hour long both semesters.

4. From what I understand, not for the required and assigned 1L courses, but yes for the electives.

Uh oh. When did you receive the info packet? My permanent address at my time of application was different from my current address. I did update UVA on my move, but I hope my info packet didn't get lost in the transition :(
