There technically is, but I've been very late both years and had no problem. But, I would get it in soon if you expect to get some need-based aid.

And also, not trying to muscle in on your thread, but I'd be happy to answer questions for you good folks and future classmates.

I'm in Australia right now, and just managed to Skype the folks. I got the big goose egg today as well. ED with lower numbers, I knew I didn't have much of a shot at scholarships, but the reality of $180,000 in debt sunk in today - scary.

Along the same lines(ish), the girl I was planning on living with got nill as well and decided to go to a different school that offered her a scholarship, which puts me back at square one on the roommate issue. Making it even more difficult is the fact that I can't make ASW to meet people, being out of the country an all.

So here's my shameless plug... Is anyone looking for a roommate still? I'm hoping to rent a 2-3 bedroom house for the year. I think that'll be a lot more comfortable than living in an apartment, plus it'd be nice to have a yard for my dog.

Meh, the debt doesn't seem that scary when you're at such a great school. If you were going to a T18+ I'd be more worried. The great thing about these T10 schools IMO is that you aren't soley depending on firm work, clerkships are supposedly invaluable, and your chances of landing one of the 2 is overwhelmingly in your favor (at t6 moreso i'm sure) at UVa and it's peers.

they should offer better discounts than 5000 for instate residents, such a rip off compared to other in state schools, unc and ucla are way cheapers. UCLA gives like 10k discounts and their tuition is under 30k anyway, and im sure that UVA is going to increase their tuition by 3-5 percent every year prob

eh, Michigan doesn't offer that great of a discount for in-state residents either. I think the difference is only like 3K.

Texas is another school though that gives in-state students a big break. The difference is like 16K or something.

UCLA's tuition is 31k for this year and 35k for next for in-state. In 2010-11, it's set to be close to 40k for in-state.

UVA is completely independent of the state of VA...they simply have to fill that 40% in-state quota to stay on campus and rent space on UVA's campus from the state. The other state schools offer bigger discounts because they're receiving funding (from taxes) from the state and since residents pay those taxes, they deserve a discount.

At least this is my understanding from the alumni I have spoken to and what the Dean has said in speeches given about the financial stability of UVA right now.

With that said, as someone who is terrified of debt and primarily interested in public interest/gov't work, I have an awful lot of questions to ask the financial aid office about their LRAP program. I'll be the whiny girl tomorrow afternoon whom they discreetly ask to leave when she starts crying and pounding her fists, babbling about how she can't afford UVA... :D :D :D

So it's done. I sent my sear deposit to UVa and withdrew from all the other schools.

Now I can officially go onto facebook and add UVa law to my profile.

Dont worry Alabama....about half way through your questions, just look around...I may not be crying, but I'm sure the "are you freaking serious" look on my face will be obvious.

I have curly hair and a tendency to blush too....can't miss me....

Has anyone had any success (or even started looking) for a job for themselves or their SO? I am moving up in June so I was trying to find a part time job for the summer, and my SO is looking for a full time job, and neither of us are getting any responses. We both graduated from W&M and have been applying to jobs we are pretty overqualified for (for lack of any other options at this point) and haven't heard anything back.

In Charlottesville (finally). I'm thinking I might be daring tomorrow and put "JSUVA" on my nametag. I'll be wearing jeans and a gray sweater over a white shirt, feel free to say hi.

I keep secretly thinking that UVA gave me a surprisingly generous scholarship for diversity reasons (not URM, I'm asian), because my stats aren't that great.. huh.

Same here... I got an offer that was way beyond expected. Maybe asians don't flock to areas like Charlottesville and so they offer a little more money to remain competitive with their peer schools (i.e. NU, Mich)... just a guess, but probably not since asians are still over-represented at UVa

diversity stats for asians:
UVa = 6.6%
NU = 18.3%
Mich = 13.2%

I got my letter from UVA today - $12k a year ($36k total). I'm more than pleased with the results, because my LSAT was kind of borderline, and I've been hearing rumors of cutbacks. I'm pretty sure UVA is where I'll end up now, unless there's a miracle and I get into one of my reaches. I wish I could be at the ASW with everyone, but I guess I'll have to make due with Europe :)

Stats: 169/3.91, VA resident.

I should have majored in Liberal Arts. It probably would have given me a higher GPA, and thus a better chance at scholarships.

Oh well, I'll get it all back and more in job security with my technical background and work experience.

Ello, does anyone know about noise levels near the Corner on Wertland St? I'm seriously considering an apt in an old Victorian house, but concerned that I might be right smack in the middle of party central. The Wade Apts staff said that noise levels really depend on who else moves into the house, but I'm not so sure they gave me a straight answer as to whether the location is noisy in general.

Um... based on my undergrad experiences there, I would definitely avoid that area unless you want to party with undergrads every thurs through saturday with some possible extra days in there too...

Hey guys, okay so I went to ASD on Friday and really really liked UVa, its my top choice, but right before I left for Virginia I got the award letter and didn't get any money. I wasn't even considering Vandy until a couple of weeks ago when I received a 72k scholly from them and the reality of debt is scaring the shit out of me. Please assure me that I will be making the right choice to forget about the money and go to UVa. If anyone can do it I'm sure it's you all. I'm so stressed.. I guess I should get used to the feeling though! Vandy isn't worth it right?

Have you visited Vandy? You might fall in love there too. I am terrified of debt as well and have recently gotten over it because I honestly asked myself if I would regret not going years down the road. I would regret it and now im not so scared of 180k in debt. UVA is awesome and if you think you could see yourself going into academia or clerkships (barring better acceptances) you should go to UVA. If you see yourself not wanting biglaw (even for like 5 years) and not wanting to have life dictated by an LRAP, you should probably go to Vandy. Some questions to think about: How much national reach do you want? How much is the difference in debt between Vandy and UVA in terms of monthly repayment, etc? If you have visited both, which place would you be happiest (and thus do better) at?

I love UVA, but I have to admit Vandy has an amazingly beautiful campus. The law building is really new and it is exquisite. There are giant magnolia trees and beautiful buildings and green grass all around. You really should visit, 72k is nothing to scoff at. I would still pick UVA, but I think it's a personal decision that you should make after experiencing both.
