Re: UVA Class of 2012
So where are good places to get furniture in Charlottesville? I have no furniture of my own, so I'm going to need to get it when I move in.

I for one have requested a floor plan, with measurements, from my landlady as to plan out, inch by inch, how I will furnish my room.

Also, DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY KIND OF JOB AT ALL THAT MY WIFE COULD TEMPORARILY GET IN C'VILLE?
I love you guys.
The university has a hiring policy that biases recruiters against hiring anyone who is not already working for UVA:

And yes, my wife works for UCSD right now and has been doing so for several years, so I'd say she has substantial "collegiate skills."

My BF has been looking for jobs in Cville, and I have been looking for something temporary for summer, and there aren't many options!

Mention " UVA law School calss 2012" to Derek for better deals. This is the time to show group bargaining powers.
My family member spend all weekend looked every furniture stores in town for value deals. This is the one to recommend to the class 2012 members.
But no, I don't really know. I did see a place near Main St and 12th though.

thanks so much for this YC!YCrevolution wrote:Not to change topics, but some random moving info:
Federal Government
For those of you who will be expecting refunds/correspondence from the IRS (and won't receive them before moving), update your address with the IRS (LinkRemoved).
For males 18-25, update your address with the Selective Service System within 10 days of moving.
Have your postal mail forwarded by the USPS.
Referrals
We should organize some referrals between TLS people (maybe in the secret FB group), esp. for those who would be getting these services anyways.
Embarq (LinkRemoved): $25 or $50 bill credit
Comcast (LinkRemoved): Internet service only; one free month of Internet
Restrictions, of course, apply.
that's a lot of addresses to change
EDIT: Thanks geoffree for the reminder. my bad YC.

[And I'm also going to be under 21 for all of my first semester.]
Electric service (unless your landlord has made other arrangements) is through Virginia Dominion Power. You can schedule a turn-on up to 60 days in advance online (and create an account).

Kind of random, but my sister just found a good job in Charlottesville through a church. If you all are religious, maybe your wife could look into part-time church work...I know a lot of times, churches are hurting for office workers, etc., especially in student-heavy areas...

On another note, my loan info FINALLY got posted. After emailing the financial aid office 4 times in the last month, I finally got this response (from the same person who kept sending me shrug-off emails before):
Thanks for the help!
So, sorry to take everyone else back to where you all were weeks ago, but I just wanted to check. My total loan package (in-state) is $58,000 with $8,500 in subsidized Stafford and $12,000 in unsubsidized Stafford loans (the rest in Grad Plus). Is that the normal breakdown?Katherine: I am not certain why your aid had not been packaged. I have just packaged and posted your aid to your SIS account.
Thanks for the help!

Yay!! With an EPC of $0, that's what I needYCrevolution wrote:I'd have to check in-state, but that sounds right. We moved here for my husband's employment (after the economy crashed) and I was unable to easily find a full-time job. However, I got good work through the university's temp program: http://www.hrs.virginia.edu/employment/temps.html. It may not be a permanent solution, but it can buy you some time.CE2JD wrote:napolnic wrote:I'm sure you've noticed that the biggest employer in Charlottesville is the University; does she your wife have any... collegiate skills? Also, if she's interested in working retail at all, this is the time to apply in Charlottesville, if possible. Lots of retailers have lost employees because students have graduated and left. I heard Barnes and Noble near the Law School lost staff.

Kane's Furniture is pretty good--their stuff has sort of a "young" feel. I also like Better Living on Rt. 29. Their prices are quite good. There's a World Market, and there are World Market coupons in a local coupon book called "Attractions." I know some people think coupons are dorky, but I think they're awesome, and you should definitely check out the Attractions book because it's a good way to try new restaurants.geoffree wrote:Didn't you see this?green wrote: So where are good places to get furniture in Charlottesville? Yea, thanks for the suggestion. I almost did the LSAT teaching thing at one point, but I started the training and absolutely hated it so I don't think that's for me.
I am going to go up there tomorrow maybe, or just wait until I move in a couple of weeks and just apply at a bunch of random retail stores. Hopefully I can find something part time at a Sunglass Hut or somewhere similar that doesn't require folding tshirts for hours.
