I'm posting this one for a friend...He is originally from South Africa. He is not black but is technically African American. He's visited his family/gone on back to Africa 10 times. Does this justify checking the African American box?

seriously though, i think the application language precludes him from checking that box. this seems like an excellent way to get c&f pwned, although i'm not quite sure how these things work.

Obama is, because he's black.

african american implies some sort of experience as a black person in the united states. that identity traditionally belongs to people descended from african slaves. it is, however, extended to members of the black community no matter what their ancestry because of the shared history and reality of black oppression in the united states. your friend is not african american... he is white. the question is about race, not nationality.

BTW, here's how Kodak, that great definer of race defines African American.

African-American - A U.S. citizen having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.

so....by that definition you could be a recent immigrant from Africa who became a US Citizen...but you would have to be black.

Hahaha...yeah...they have a list of definitions that they use for suppliers. I guess they want more minority owned suppliers or some such thing.

I'm sure there are some better ones out there, but I'm lazy and that seemed like a decent one.

This is probably correct. However, since they don't ask for color I would check the box. If they asked for African American/black then no, but if just African American then yes.

They can't assume you understand AA equates to Black American. If they meant that they should write "black american".
