To all those accepted at Penn, can anybody confirm or deny the prestigious UG requirement for admission?

Look on LSN. Plenty of people with non-prestigious UGs are getting in, I'm sure.

A friend of mine works at Penn. Last year she was given the task to compile the student profile. 10% of the class went to Penn UG and another 10% was the other 7 ivys. Adding in Stanford MIT Caltech Chicago NWestern JHU and the other "prestigious" schools probably gives you another 10%.

Of course that is the class profile not the admisssions profile, but it should give you an idea that it's not a big deal.

I currently attend a TTT undergrad (Seton Hall) and will most likely be attending Penn Law with a smallish scholarsihp. It's not a requirement. That would be ridiculous. But is it unusual for a top school to want students from top schools?

There's a correlation between undergrad prestige/rank and LSAT scores of applicants. So, it's impossible to conclude a bias or preference based on the proportion of students with that background at a top law school.

Agreed. I have on problem admitting that most of the people I know who attended Ivies and other top schools are a heck of a lot smarter than most of the people I know here at Seton Hall. There are exceptions, of course. But if there is any kind of bias, its a bias towards better applicants. Which is hardly surprising.

Based on the LSAC "Prelaw Advisor Action Report" for my school, I'd say Penn gives less of a benefit to students from elite UGs than any of its peers. In 06-07 (the most recent year for which I have numbers) here are the applicant stats from Stanford UG for Penn and some of its peer schools:

Numbers are the mean LSAT/GPA of the group.

UVA: 66 applicants, 165.7/3.59. 27 accepted, 170.6/3.69 (41% acceptance rate)
Michigan: 82 applicants, 165.8/3.60. 26 accepted, 170.5/3.69 (32% acceptance rate)
Chicago: 88 applicants, 165.8/3.64. 23 accepted, 169.3/3.70 (26% acceptance rate)
Boalt: 156 applicants, 164.6/3.59. 51 accepted, 168.3/3.75 (33% acceptance rate)
Penn: 85 applicants, 165.4/3.61. 16 accepted, 168.8/3.86 (19% acceptance rate)

Percentage-wise, for Stanford undergrads, Penn was also tougher to get into than NYU, Columbia, Stanford, and Harvard, and had the same acceptance rate as Yale. The numbers from 05-06, even though it was an easier year overall, show a similar general pattern. I can say that this mirrored my own experience this cycle, as I was waitlisted at Penn, despite showing a lot of interest, having a decent profile, and getting into NYU and Columbia. As to why they do this, I can't say. I'm sure their admissions office has a lot of information built up - maybe they've found it best not to admit high percentages of elite UG students with numbers within their ranges because these students end up getting into better schools - in 05-06, only 2 out of 24 admits attended Penn, and in 06-06, it was 3 out of 16. Not that it's neccessarily a YP tactic - I just don't know.

But to answer your original question, no, I don't think there's any sort of unofficial "elite UG requirement" at Penn. If anything, you've got a better shot there (comparatively) than at a lot of other schools.

Perhaps Penn merely realizes that Stanford undergrad is where rich kids who couldn't get into Berkeley go & disrespects it accordingly?

Just to clarify for those who are confused. The University of Pennsylvania is NOT Penn State. It's an Ivy League University in Philadelphia & is ranked as a Top 10 Law School. It is generally called Penn, not to be confused with Penn State.

Thanks for bumping a 9 month old thread with that nugget of information. I'm sure most people on this site needed clarification, because there's no way that darkarmour's responses could've been sarcastic!
