Titles on personal statements

Do people give their personal statements titles? I did without hesitation, and then I realized that might not be what the cool kids do. Out of curiosity, on a scale of 1-10, how out there is it?

Ann Ivey says no title just a header with your name, ssn # the title of the assignment itself [personal statement; diversity statement, addendum] and a footer with page numbers. But I don't think it could hurt unless it's really gimmicky.

Mine is titled: "From Zero to Hero: The [my name] Story"

Point taken. For some strange reason I feel like an essay seems naked without one. Like having a business without a sign out front. Of course it's not going to help you if it's stupid.

yeah, yeah I'm wavering between

"I'm Unique and Artsy. Please, Someone Pay Attention to Me!"

"My Mom Thinks I'm Smart Enough to be a Good Lawyer and Other Reason's I'm Applying to X Law School"

You are all very clever. Gold Star. Does anyone have any advise I can use?

I don't know, but I might have some advice for you. For one, learn the difference between advice (noun) and advise (verb).

Thank god someone pointed that out! What kind of crazy place would the internet be if typos went ignored?!

Ah, I would have said ignorance. I guess typo works too. It's easy to use typos as a scapegoat...

I think titles are fine. Great, even. I get annoyed when I see stories without titles, but it is a bit different with PSes. But seriously, titles grab attention, they summarize... there are so many good things about them.

I think both those titles are really cute. They'd work if you kept up that tone up through the essay.

However, "reasons". Please no errors in your title! Auto-ding.

Unless you are like Smokey the Bear and have no fingers that would not constitute a typo. On my keyboard, the S key is not adjacent to the C key.

I just titled mine "Personal Statement". I think I got admitted solely on the strength of this creative title.

Evidently "A Million Little Pieces" was taken, so I just called it "[SBL's Name]: Personal Statement"

I think I'm going to go with "The Smoking Gun: Help Me Learn How to Get Rid of It".
