High GPA from Yale and very low LSAT score

Hello,

I recently applied to University of Washington Law School and Seattle U Law School and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what my chances for admissions are. Since I'm married with a child, I don't have the luxury of applying to schools all over the country. I graduated from Yale ten years ago with a degree in Biology with a 3.71 GPA. I published articles in the "Yale Scientific Magazine" and worked on research projects during the summer. I have ten years of work history and other life experience that may enhance my application. My problem is that I took the LSAT and scored a miserable 149! I added an addendum to my admissions file at both schools and I re-take the test this Saturday. I expect to score in the 155-160 range as I do in practice tests. While my GPA is in line with what the University of Washington likes to see, my LSAT is far below their average. My file has been reviewed at the UW and they are going to wait for my new LSAT results before making a decision. UW will average my scores and Seattle U will accept the highest score. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Elisabeth

good luck on the re-take

Elisabeth,

Your credentials look super impressive. I think you will be a catch at those schools with the target LSAT score that you are mentioning.

Good luck!

Dear bronwynsmith,

If you score within the 155-160 range you definitely be admitted to Seattle University Law School and will likely get in to law school at UW. UW is quite a bit easier on residents, so this will help you quite a bit. Best of luck!

The LSAT is fairly meaningless.

Your work experience in the 10 years you've been out of school should be more than enough to offset any damage the 149 could cause.

I strongly disagree. How To Get Into Top Law Schools by Richard Montauk has many quotes directly from head of admissions at many top schools. LSAT is your primary predictor for potential to succeed and GPA/Work Experience is a measure of past success. There is a specific quote I would write if I had the book with me but it talks about how law schools are hesitant to admit the low LSAT high GPA types. They say that this kind of student typically does bad in law school. They say work experience can cancel a poor GPA but not a poor LSAT. Work experiece and GPA measure a similar kind of thing while LSAT is more of an IQ test. I have nothing against bronwynsmith and I hope he gets into all the schools he applies to. I am just trying to correct what I think is bad advice based on the books and research I have done on law school admissions.

Why did you bother resurrecting a four year old thread?

That's funny. I didn't even see that. I am looking at Seattle and did a search.

Where art thou, four years later?
