Transfer from Penn State to UPenn?

So, I'm simply not good at standardized testing...I'm not horrible, but...my scores come out just a wee bit above average when, as a student, I'm way above. I didn't create this thread to brag...I just mean that I can rock a classroom no matter what's thrown at me. I got into Penn State with a nice scholarship...nice average school for my nice, slightly above average LSAT. Now, I have no doubt in my mind that I will do great 1L. I'm determined, focused, etc. Penn State is a great place to start for me...small town, close professor-student relationships, etc, but...as far as what I want to do in life, I need more. I've researched Penn, love Penn, love their curriculum, their Middle East Certificate, their study abroad in Israel, their joint degree with their International Affairs school,t he list goes on and on.

So for the question, if I rock 1L...how hard will it be for me to transfer into Penn from Penn State? I made a measly 158 on the LSAT if that still matters...

Transferring from Penn St. to UPenn will be extremely difficult, if not impossible. Not only is Penn St. several leagues below UPenn, you have to deal with applicants from stronger local schools in between, like Villanova and Temple. I'd guess that you will need to finish your 1L year in the top 5% to have a good chance. Only a few schools take LSAT score into consideration when evaluating transfer applications, and I don't think UPenn is one of them. Best of luck to you.

Transferring, especially in law school, is a daunting process. In my opinion, don't go to a school unless you would be happy getting a degree from there. Otherwise wait a year and retake the LSATs.

I def. agree. And I would be very happy receiving a PSU degree, afterall, that's why I applied and accepted. However, I'd be even happier to receive a Penn degree...and well, if I could save my $125 and not re-take the LSAT and still, with hard work, make it in and receive that degree, it's worth a try right? I understand that transferring is a big deal and hard to do. I'm just playing around with the idea now (I like to have options)...this may or not be an option for me, but, I have to research it first I suppose! Thanks for your help!

Going from T2 to T-14 will probably take top 5%-10%. Definitely not impossible. From what I've heard, top 10% or better will give you a shot, because Penn focuses mainly on your 1L grades. That said, I have also heard that they don't accept a lot of transfers in general, so that can make it more difficult.

Do most people that finish in the top 5-10% attempt to transfer in T2 schools?

Just curious, what T14 schools are transfer friendly? I expect to go to a low Tier 1 school and am curious what my transfer options are if I wanted.

Why would this be that hard? I mean its the same school with different campuses.

No probably not, this will not happen. You could probably transfer into GW or something if you have top 10%.

Where did you hear this? They took 29 transfers last year (harvard took 2, Yale took 14). On lsac.org you can look at how many transfers came in the previous year. They have a page on the website dedicated to this subject. Penn is one of the few elite schools that takes several transfers every year. At a place like Penn St. (and with a 158) you would have to be exceptional, but this is absolutely doable, and Penn is one the schools where it can be done.

I have a question regarding transferring. I tanked really hard on the LSAT (160) and have been taking 19 credits each semester to finish, including supporting my wife and two little boys, so no time to take the December test. I have been accepted to two top 50 schools, two others ranked in the 70's and one third tier (Idaho) which I applied to because of their Indian Law program, and I'm from Idaho.
I want to be in the pacific northwest anywhere from San Fran/Sacramento up to Seattle.
Where do you think I need to be to have a realistic, or at least fighting chance to transfer to Penn after first year, and will it matter which of those schools I attend?
In the interest of full disclosure, I would be happy to attend any of those schools for three years and am not worried about posturing to give myself an opportunity at Penn and then getting stuck. Penn just has so many amazing opportunities and I love Philly, a lot.
Also, I have heard there is no financial aid for transfer students. Is this true? And if so, how on earth does a person pay for that beautiful education?
