Top Law Schools

LSAT: 177
GPA: 3.42

I studied intensely for my 177, only to be crushed by waitlist notifications. Maybe it's my GPA, or maybe this was just a bad cycle. However, I am now sure that I will never receive enough scholarship money to make law school reasonably affordable.

Is there a website similar to TLS, but for MBA programs? TLS played a huge role in both my LSAT preparation and law school selections and expectations. I want similar support in trying to decide whether to try my hand at the GMAT and business school to advance my career. I am not taking law school off the table entirely, but I want more information.

Hey, that's a great LSAT score. I think you can get a full ride at splitter friendly schools. Am pretty sure you will get a big scholarship from wustl. Don't know about T-14.

You having struck out completely with an amazing LSAT and a not-that-bad GPA makes me think there was either something wrong with other parts of your application packet or that you were waitlisted for yield protection. Did you ever send any letters of continued interest to schools where you were waitlisted? If you tried that and it didn't work, then have someone else review your packet and see what was wrong.

I had it reviewed several times by several sets of eyes. I'm not the only person to have struck out with my stats this cycle, but I did have one "F" on my transcript. The bigger problem is money. Even if I can get in, I don't want to take out loans that crippling.

According to https://mylsn.info/7e3sbb/, you'd normally be in the running for pretty good scholarships from NYU all the way down. Not sure why your cycle was so weird. Business school will also likely entail loans that, depending on where you go, may be more difficult to pay off (i.e. you won't be very likely to having a starting salary of 190k).

But I think the real question is whether you want to be in business or in law. If you do actually want to be a lawyer, don't let an off-cycle stop you from doing so; reapply next year, apply more broadly, and try to tailor your applications to the schools you apply to. If you want to be in business, go get an MBA. But an MBA won't solve the problems you're having right now with law school admissions.

I want to be an attorney, but I'm just not sure it's in the cards with how bad this cycle was. I would also have to fork over $1200 in law school applications to reapply because I used all of my fee waivers this year, and I don't believe that I'm able to get more.

My idea was that if I cannot go to law school, then at the very least I want to make more money in my current industry or move to a new one, and I figured business school could help. The reason I asked about a similar website to TLS was to learn about the GMAT and MBA scholarships/financing (much like what is done here on TLS).

Go ahead and look into business school more, but don't get discouraged from law school. Even if you can't get fee waivers again, $1200 is probably quite a bit less than what you would pay to take the GMAT and the time you would dedicate to studying for it.

Have you looked in the joint MBA/JD at schools? I know Baylor, Syracuse, Cornell, and Duke all have the program. An MBA and JD from any of those schools would at minimum get you an interview with a respected firm.

Are you trolling? The bolded is definitely not true, and this advice is useless for OP if their problem is getting admitted to JD programs in the first place.

Really depends on your work experience too. You’re going to need 2+ years of solid work experience to get into any business school worth attending. Also, while it’s not quite as common as in law school, people strike out when recruiting in business school too and the sought after jobs (consulting, banking, sexy tech or brand management) are very competitive. You can’t just walk in unprepared and expect to do well.

I know. That's why I asked about the equivalent of TLS for business school. The whole point of my post is that I want advice so I don't go in and get slammed by the harsh realities of MBA programs. I would have 6-7 years of work experience before applying anyway.

I may try law school again, especially with the encouragement in this thread, but I will still want more info on MBA programs first.

As to the dual MBA/JD idea, that's not what I want for 2 reasons:
1. It's too expensive, and my whole reason for crushing the LSAT was to minimize debt at a good school.
2. I want to be a lawyer or change to another industry using the skills taught in MBA programs. I do not think that the skills from both, however helpful, are worth the extra time and money.
