Is a letter of rec. more valuable coming from

a staff attorney I have worked closely with (at a high-profile legal NGO) or one of the principals who knows me and my work but has not been directly involved?
I have read on here and elsewhere that letters from those who have worked closely with you are better than those from people in high positions who don't really know you. Maybe I'm taking that too much to heart?

Is the staff attorney your supervisor or otherwise in a position to review your work product?

Yes, I have worked closely on a project with them.

Then they'd be the better source of a recommendation.
