so if I attend a law school and do a j.D./Masters, do law firms hire based only off your rank in the j.D. program or do they consider both?

Law firms only care about the J.D. The Master's won't give you a boost (unless you're looking to do patent litigation and the Master's is a STEM Master's, and even then the value add will be marginal). If you'll pay additional tuition and/or spend additional time in school to get the Master's, don't do it.

It feels like most of your threads are some version of "But what if I do [X]? Then can I guarantee a biglaw job from a regional school?" The answer is always no.

If you want biglaw, you should be aiming for a degree from a top school, period. There's no magic workaround for that unless you can predict your grades.
