What's the consensus on beards?

Beginning law school this fall and would like to get some outside perspective regarding beards throughout the legal community.

Sitch: Short, well-kept, full beard.

Obvi: No Joe Dirts, Gandalf the Greys, Flavor savers, or silent film era mustaches.

Will professors look down their noses at a student with a beard?

How will this affect interviews with employers?

Thanks for the replies in advance!

I think your account image will do just fine.

Let's assume profs hate it and would gladly give everyone who has a beard an F. Why does that matter considering grading is blind? Just don't tip them off to your beardy nature in any exam answers and you're golden.

Maybe some employers will ding you but they'll probably find something else to ding you for if not that anyway. If you're really concerned then that's what razors are for.

I hardly ever shaved out of laziness in law school but I did during interview season/internships and look at me now.

FWIW, my father has been an attorney for like 40 years and rocks a beard. Kept close, well groomed... no Grizzly Adams

All good advice! I think as long as the beard's groomed and not out of control you should be fine.

The consensus is that men have beards, and little boys have clean-shaven cheeks. Are you a man, or are you a little boy?

I brush my teeth with tree bark, carry nunchucks tucked in my sock, and whittled all my furniture from tree stumps...you decide

Nothing wrong with beards in law school. Keep it clean. Beards are largely not a problem anymore in legal hiring either so long as it's short and well kept.

If you grow out a manly beard though, just make sure that you keep the mustache when you shave it for OCI. A great mustache really impresses employers (handlebars are a plus).

I would shave for job interviews.
