Leaving an engineering job for IP law?

Quick background on me: I graduated from UOttawa with a BASc in Computer Engineering two years ago. RIght now I work at a semiconductor company as an ASIC Engineer making about $108k in San Jose. The problem is that I'm getting tired of hardware debugging and circuit design. I've always known about IP (patent) law as a possible career for an engineer, but I'm debating if it's really worth it the debt, time, etc. What do you folks recommend? Also I have no idea how much a patent lawyer makes after 5-10 years. I see figures ranging from $70,000 to $140,000. If I were to work at a normally sized IP firm, what's the income I could expect? Appreciate any insight
