Utility in writing a "Why XYZ" for schools that don't explicitly ask?

Thoughts?
Wash U. and I believe Cornell and UVA aren't asking for those optional essays.
If I'm applying, is there a point to writing "Why XYZ" essays for these schools then?

UVA appreciates them. Definitely write one if you're in YP territory.

Mind explaining the YP zone? Thanks

Yield Protect. It's when schools will waitlist you to protect their acceptance rate if they think you'll matriculate to a better school. If both your numbers are above their 75th percentiles, there is a good chance you'll be YP'd at UVA, for example. Writing a Why X essay shows interest and enthusiasm. It might not make a difference, but if you don't write one and have great stats, UVA will waitlist you because they'll think you're just blanketing the T14 and don't specifically care to go to UVA.

Thank you! Besides UVA, where else more yield protective? Duke asked me to send in why duke just to see whether giving me a app fee waiver.

Penn, UVA, Michigan, and Duke are the most notorious for YP.

(Sidenote: you're not getting YP'd with a 164)

Make sense. They are kinda stuck in the middle zone where outstanding applicants pick them as safety.

Exactly.

So Why X doesn't help if were not above both 75th percentiles?

I'm not saying that. I'm just saying a term and practice doesn't apply to you.
