Computer Savvy people: Problems with file formats

Hey all,
I just had all of my application attachment proof-read for grammar et al. I sent them from Word as a .docx file (I have windows). They were successfully opened on his end and edited. He then sent them back to me via facebook messenger (as an attachment) and my computer cannot read the file to open any of the attachments.
Does anyone have an idea here? I told him to email them to me instead, but I doubt that that will make a difference. I am not sure what the file type is now on his end, but I can't imagine that Word on a Mac would save it as anything other than a .doc or .docx, no?
