Which undergrad Major? Law or Sociology? (2 law degrees?

Post by B_montgomery » Wed Sep 21, 2016 1:04 pm

Hello my fellow lawyers and law students. I am new to this site, so if I make any annoying mistakes, do forgive me ;)

Now before you say 'Law is a graduate degree and a undergraduate is required' I live in England where Law is a bachelors degree obtained after high school. Now I do want a JD (from Harvard or Yale) but before I can apply, I need a bachelor degree of course.

I have the option to study either law (LLB) or a BA in sociology. I cannot decide which one is best. I mean, if I get a LLB and a JD then I could use the title, Mr B, LLB, JD which I guess would sound professional.

I have contacted loads of American law schools and they have assured me that already having a first degree in law (LLB) will not hinder my chances of applying to the JD

let me know what you guys think :)

pick whichever one you think would most interest you and where you can get the best grades in. law schools here in America only care about your GPA and LSAT score. your major isn't really important to them so just go with whichever one you think you'd like best! :)

It really doesn't matter beyond GPA and LSAT. For example, I'm a Business Admin major. The only downside to being a business major is that I haven't/won't be taking any classes in formal logic, which kind of made going into the LSAT like walking into a cow pasture at night with no flashlight - you're going to step into something. The upside is that being a business major is relatively straightforward when it comes to grading and I enjoy learning business-related info like investing, accounting, finance, etc.

Are you planning on practicing in the US, or will you be going back?

If it's the latter, I'd say get the LLB.

Major in computer science so you can either do IP law and make a boat load of money or not go to law school and still be able to make a boat load of money
