How much value does UMichigan place on their supplemental essays? (Like, choosing to write them versus choosing not to write them).

From what I understand if Michigan is a reach school or if you're a YP candidate, it's important to write it.

"Yield Protection"

Michigan is somewhat notorious for wait-listing extremely qualified candidates who don't express enough interest in the school as a form of yield protection. It's to help protect their rankings. If they accept a ton of people who end up going elsewhere, their ranking suffers. So to insure against this, they don't admit people whose numbers will likely get them better offers unless those people express a strong interest in specifically going to Michigan.

I see that there is room for one supplemental essay, if minority, is a diversity statement or a 'Why Mich?' suggested as a border/YP candidate?

Unless they changed it this year, you should be able to write/submit both.

Yeah, I guess I asked my question prematurely. They are both under the same tab of "Supplemental essays," but it lists 8 options and says no more than two.
