Do people write "Why NYU" Essays?

NYU is one of my top-choice schools, and I have good reasons why: my dad is an NYU law alum, I've gone to several events at the law school, and have chatted with the Dean. NYU doesn't ask for a "Why NYU" supplement, but they do allow applicant to submit supplementary essays. Do people send "Why" essays to NYU, or is that just not a thing?

I specifically asked admissions about this and it's up to you. They're not going to hate you for writing one but it's not something that I've seen is pushed by anyone either. I plan on writing one mainly because NYU is one of, if not the, top choices for me.

It definitely couldn't hurt!

I went to NYU undergrad and wrote a "Why NYU" supplemental essay talking about why I would love to go back, and even though I didn't have the numbers, I got waitlisted. So I'm assuming that the essay helped in some way.

If it is your top choice, pull out all the stops (aka, definitely write a WHY NYU essay).
