I've heard something about having to make a deposit to a law school first...

Current SEO intern here - don't wait until you deposit to apply, you'll miss the deadline. Apply after you have applied to law school. SEO interviews candidates before they are admitted to law school, but admits them after they receive proof of enrollment at a law school.
