You will probably get into every school with those stats, and get hefty scholarship offers from Columbia and Chicago (and any other that school that offers merit scholarship). There is no reason to re-take.

Retake if you want to. However, anything you don't get in your application cycle will not be because of your LSAT score. There will be fewer than 10 applicants in your cycle with your combination of being AA male with your LSAT and GPA. The moment you crossed 170, you got a place where additional LSAT points aren't really going to make a big difference.

If you don't get in with a 173 everywhere then is not because of your LSAT... The only schools that won't let you in are schools that believe you won't actually attend of admitted (YP).

As you are now, you'll get a Dillard and have a great shot at a Ruby. You'll also be looking at a Mordecai and probably a Hughes if you can convince those schools you'd actually come. Pretty much any school outside the T-14 will be more than happy to give you a full scholarship, but they'll be wasting their time because you're not going.

Your GPA is too low for the Hamilton at Columbia...there's no URM boost for that and I have not found a single AA to receive one.

Your biggest problem is going to be Yield Protection.

Let me go back on what I said about the Hamilton earlier. You could get it with your current stats.

Like, everybody else said, there's no real reason to retake, considering URM. But really, you might as well, especially if your preptests were in the 176-78 range. It can only help.

I went back because I just heard from an AA who got the Hamilton with a lower GPA, so yeah, it can happen.

I totally missed the AA part. With that boost you're right. My bad.

Lol this is the first thread I've read where the consensus is NOT to re-take. :D

Inversion wrote:My question is, how high would I have to score to make the retake look like it was "worth it"? I'm afraid of being judged negatively (especially by Yale adcom) for retaking what is objectively a good score without a significant increase.
I'm with everyone else in that there is no need for you to retake and you are gonna have a great cycle regardless, but I just wanted to step in and address this since no one else has.

Literally any improvement will be taken as a positive, even by just a point. You are not gonna get judged negatively for this at all. There is literally no downside to retaking here, though the upside is somewhat limited, as other posters have pointed out.

But idk, maybe it's just me but I don't think I could've left LSAT points on the table if I felt I easily could've done better. But regardless, congrats on a great score and (what will be) a great cycle.

Scoring lower won't hurt you. Do you really feel you could do much better? I got a high score in my first take and I definitely felt those last few points could have gone the other way if something changes in a game or a reading passage. Despite the professional type of test takers that can consistently do 178 -180, it's worrisome to me that I could repeat a high score on another take.

To me those last few points are the hardest to be certain you will get the next time. To be fair, I would give this same advice to any student, not only URM. Yes you will get a boost, but those last few points are hard for anyone, except possibly if you've lost points on games. Even then, these older games they have been using can be tricky.

Maybe spend that time and energy on crafting your application or do some awesome volunteer job that will help your narrative when you apply. That is what I would do if I were in your shoes. The LSAT is just one step in the process. If you want Yale I would focus on continuing to be an amazing person.
