Really? Is the email a verbal reprimand? So if the schools ask about any reprimand, should I disclose? I'm really worried about this.

Yeah, I'm not even sure my teacher remembered me. But it did happened. And the email was hard evidence. I don't want to disclose it actually.

That's not a reprimand. It's more like constructive criticism - or basically, teaching you/helping you understand, which is the professor's job. It's feedback on your work. A reprimand is going to have some kind of formal element.

So no, you don't need to disclose this.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry that I forgot to mention this , but my teacher also said he would not report to the Dean if I stopped. I didn't know that copying from online dictionary is plagiarism until he told me. And I did stopped immediately. Is this still not some kind of reprimand or warning? I'm sorry that I keep asking questions, I'm just worried.

I would interpret a reprimand as something more formal, that would go on your record somewhere. I don't think it should apply to something like a teacher explaining what you shouldn't do on an assignment.

However if you're really concerned I don't think disclosing would hurt you. It sounds as though you are an international student and I think most educators are aware that other countries (especially East Asia, though I don't know where you're from) can have different standards for plagiarism. (However if you did your undergrad in the US then it will be expected that you should know US standards for plagiarism.)

But I really don't think you have to disclose this.

Thank you very much for your advice. I will not disclose to other schools then. I did disclose on my application to Emory. And I plan to disclose to UVA because they mentioned " verbal" and "informal" in the question. I want to play safe there. Hopefully the admission committee would be as understanding as you are.

I'm indeed an international student. I did my undergrad in China and grad in the U.S. The reputation of Chinese academic field is kinda...not good...The admission committee probably knows that too, I hope.

I had a lot of East Asian students (in a past life) who struggled with the transition to US standards for plagiarism. I think as long as you make clear you realized the standards were different and haven't had any issues since then, it will be fine. Good luck with your applications.
