Top Law Schools

Serious question as an undergrad currently applying - Why is Georgetown in the T14? It looks like the numbers aren't on par with the other 13. Location? The fact we need a prestigious school in D.C? The employment numbers aren't stand out either from what I can tell. Thanks

You are right OP, I think the other 13 schools (and Michigan seems to be faltering a bit as well) are practically all at least 10% better in terms of BL/Fed Clerk percentages (which I think is a better measure than raw employment numbers for a number of reasons) than GULC.

Georgetown's numbers seem to be in a league of their own equidistant between the other non-Michigan t14 schools on one end, and Texas, UCLA, Vanderbilt, and USC on the other. Due to simplicity and history, we continue to recognize the t14 categorization. Yet, the chasm remains.

I think we can consider Georgetown the undisputed champion of regional schools. Arguably the most exciting environment to study law within, the best location for prestigious internships / schmoozing with elite politicians / judges / colleagues, a thriving region outmatched in new legal hiring only by NYC. D.C. just happens to be an incredible region for law.

I don't think the distinction is very material in any event. Little separates the bottom-most National school from the top-most Elite Regional school.

The answer is that while BL/FC numbers are a great metric, it is just one metric, like USNWR rankings. Some schools are more geared toward public interest, government, or non-JD jobs placement. More importantly, some schools attract more of the sort of people who look for non-BL/FC jobs.

Not trying to justify Georgetown's relatively poor BL/FC numbers and (I assume) its relatively poor broader employment numbers, just wanted to point out that much of the TLS wisdom about this sort of thing must be weighed against the fact that BL/FC numbers are not the only means by which we should evaluate a school.
