No they don't automatically update, you have to send an updated transcript after the fall semester. And the recruiters are right, if you submit in late December then they won't see anything but your updated grades (granted if they are actually updated close to then, and are available to submit, at least at my undergrad our official transcripts weren't updated until January) because they won't review them that quickly, now if you're doing a Duke priority track or something like that then they may not see it. But in December they are swamped so things may move more slowly many schools like Columbia won't even look at many apps until around December so you should be okay.
