I have a quick question - if I am employed by a tenured professor (as a full-time research assistant), and I get a LOR from this professor, does that count as an academic reference or an employer reference?

Hello:

I hope all is well.

Judging by your situation, it sounds as though the letter of recommendation would be from an employer and not a professor. The reason being you are employed by this professor as opposed to him/her having you as a student and being able to speak about you as a student. It sounds more like an employer-employee status.
