On their website, Stanford says "we encourage you to visit the school and arrange to meet with a member of the admissions staff." Since I live in the Bay Area, I'm planning to visit before I submit my application. However, I can only go on weekends and am not sure what I'd be doing there other than looking at the buildings. Would a general tour of the whole campus be helpful? Are there events on the weekends that non-students could sit in on? And if I meet with an admissions officer, what should I say/ask? Thanks in advance.

There really is no reason to visit and fall in love with a school only to be rejected, and it won't help your acceptance prospects.

A visit to the campus is not necessary, but some students do prefer to see what the area is like because they will be there for a minimum of three years. It might help to visit the campuses you are admitted to as opposed to visiting all those you are applying to. This can reduce travel costs and help you make a better and well informed decision.

Most students do prefer just to look on the websites or rankings as opposed to actually visiting the campus. If you were to visit the campus you may always ask an adviser or events committee member what events are going on campus that weekend to get a better feel for the university and the student body, but once again, that is not necessary.

I disagree. I think a visit can be helpful, especially when writing a why X essay. It shows the school you have a genuine interest.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Stanford's not too far, so I figure it can't hurt to visit.

It's weird to have that avatar and name, but nothing they've posted has promoted the school in any way (I've been paying attention), so I'm letting them cook.

If you want to make your visit productive, go to the admissions office and accidentally drop about $100,000 in cash. Wink at the adcomms. Walk away, forgetting about all that money you accidentally dropped.
