Top Law Schools

I am 1/2 white and 1/2 PR. I was planning on putting both races on my applications. Recently I was talking to a friend who goes to a top 10 law school. He said he only put that he was african american even though he was only 1/4 AA and 3/4 white since it helps in admissions. He said I should just put PR on mine and if I put White and PR it may hurt a little in comparison. Any feedback on that? Would i get in trouble to just put PR down?

He was making it seem more like a business transaction as to why not increase your chances as much as possible. But I agree it does seem shady. Thanks.

yea man. you most likely wouldn't "get in trouble" per se, but I would just be as honest as possible and let the chips fall where they may. just put both down (it's not like you have to allocate percentages to each). at the end of the day you'll feel better about yourself as a human.

There's nothing morally, procedurally, ethically, or legally wrong with indicating that you're Hispanic from Puerto Rico. Most Hispanics are white anyways.

It's fine. The consensus here is to put down what you identify as - 1/2 [insert race or ethnicity here] "counts" just as much as 100%.

The US govnt and probably LSAC separate Hispanic as an ethnicity now (compared to race), so all PRs would identify as Hispanic and white.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they are doing this now

If u want to identify as PR, which you are, it shouldn't matter what your actual racial breakdown is

Until 2009 LSAC divided Hispanics into Mexican-American, Puerto Rican, and everybody else. After that they started treating Hispanic as a unitary category, which is how it's reported now on the 509s and by the ABA. I suspect this means the conventional wisdom that only MAs and PRs get a big URM boost among Hispanics is now significantly out of date and inaccurate, since schools have no administrative incentive to limit affirmative action among Hispanic applicants in this way.
