Just a general question: If you ED somewhere, is a "Why X" essay an expected/necessary supplement? My understanding of the "Why X" essay is that it is used to show the school a heightened level of interest and is a tool for them in terms of yield protection. In this sense, ED is kinda the ultimate "Why X' essay in that it proves interest and is a guarantee of yield protection for the school. So basically, is there any point in writing one of these essays if you ED?

I think you are absolutely correct. I can't imagine why they would care that you have family/SO nearby, except to gauge the likelihood that you will attend — which they already know is 100%. A typo or other screwup could definitely hurt you though.
