http://www.leiterrankings.com/jobs/2006 ... hing.shtml this is a link from 2006 about placement in academia which has both NYU and Colmbia in group 3 and Cornell in group 5.

Sure, all fed clerkships are not created equal, but when we talk about "fed clerkships" we're not really talking about SCOTUS.

Why is this new crop of 0Ls giving such bad advice?

I think the takeaway from this thread is that if you've got $100,000 to burn on a 5-10% extra chance of getting a clerkship in the Court of Appeals instead of a lowly district court or a V10 instead of a lowly V15, and you prefer NYC to Ithaca, go to Columbia.

If you're not cdotson2, then go to Cornell.

This is a link from 2009 about "objective criteria." It has Cooley ranked #12.

Your advice is terrible, and you're terrible.

This is a really really bad way to choose between these schools. The people getting the top feeder & SCOTUS clerkships you're drooling over often get them based on the achievements they already bring to the table - they're smart enough and qualified enough, the name on the diploma is not making the dispositive difference when you're looking at these schools (we're not comparing T14 with TTs or the like). If you're going to have the qualifications coming out of Columbia to get a V10 (lol) or feeder COA (superlol), you can get it from any number of T-14 schools.

(Imma leave SCOTUS out of this because supertriplelol to that.)

Your point about it not being you/me is valid, I have a small chance of being that person, but I don't want to willingly hinder my efforts. personally the possibility of a v10 or COA clerkship is worth 100k in debt to me (I know it isn't for everyeone).
What are you talking about. Most of CLS summers at a "V10". CLS and HLS constitute the largest summer classes at nearly every top NY firm. Many V10s are accessible from median.

If you go to Columbia, its more likely than not that the "V10 person" WILL be you. Whether or not that's desirable is another matter.

Also, COA clerkships and a V10 SA are not at all comparable in terms of difficulty to get.

Really nony? Come on. The "qualifications" for a T6 student to go to a "V10" or equivalent firm are basically median. Its the modal outcome (for those that want it - top firms in non-NY markets are often more competitive and dont follow vault).

Okay, then limit my comment to the top clerkship thing. I was just going off whoever was lumping the v10 with clerkships, but my point is directed more at cdotson's clerkship dreams.

A. Nony, you have to understand this, he is probably 22 years old from a wealthy family. The 100k difference doesn't really matter. Also, "special snowflake" syndrome is a very real thing for a good percentage of the kids that are starting to finish undergrad. (This isn't the case for all people this age). The sad thing about special snowflake syndrome is that it isn't the kids fault.
