A Message to Incoming T-14 Students

I know it is a little early, but I want to take this time to congradulate all of our 0L posters and readers who are attending a T-14 this year. You've made it! While you don't yet have a job or even any grades, this still marks a significant achievement.
At times TLS has a way of demeaning this accomplishment. Posters who have been accepted to some of these schools are often told to retake the LSAT and reapply for more scholarship money and acceptances. Others are told that they should not attend altogether. In many cases these are the right calls. But let that not demean you. No matter what T-14 you are attending, no mater your scholarship, you should be proud of your accomplishment.
Good Luck!

No, no –– you have it all wrong. I just want to offer the 0Ls a different perspective than the fear mongering (which I will grant does have its place) that typically dominates this website.

your congratulatory masturbation is misguided, overinclusive, and, at the same time, underinclusive. in short, this thread stinks.

I think it might be time again for TLS to have a talk.

Chimp isn't entirely wrong. Congratulations might be justified for high LSAT scores or high GPAs, but admission to law school? Fapfapfap.

Years ago, TLS posters would advise people to attend almost any highly rated law school at sticker. Getting in was the important part. No care was given to the cost, and even less the actual job prospects. That was the prevailing wisdom. The problem was, no one really knew to look at job prospects. It is was an unknown unknown, and the Class of 2013 paid for it dearly.
Then the wisdom--if such a word can even used with reference to the vast majority of advice given on this site--changed. Now, it seemed, it was no longer sufficient to attend any old law school, or even a highly ranked law school for that matter. HYS, or a T-6 with a scholarship, or a lower T-14 with a massive scholarship was now required. Fair enough.
But for the posters on this site, some of whom have already defaced this thread, to now claim to have the answers (yes, I know many are not the same as those giving advice in the old days) is truly egregious. TLS is a hive mind. Many of the most prominent posters on this site have yet to matriculate into law school. They are giving advice merely on what they know of it from other posters. They are not spreading knowledge, for they truly know nothing, but rather ideas for which they have little, if any, true understanding. That is not wisdom.

The prominent posters are now practicing attorneys who have gone through the process years ago and have stuck with TLS in one alt or another.

The true megapoasters haven't given advice in a very long time.

I noted in my post that I am aware that many of the current posters are not the same as those from yesteryear. The problem is, the current posters are no better than the those of TLS-past.

Except that you already conceded that information on job prospects has only become recently known.
Also sticker now means 100k more in debt at graduation than it did 5 years ago.

This was a pretty refreshing post to read. TLS seems harsh sometimes, and for GOOD reason ITE, but it's still nice to see some positive words thrown around at times.

Also important was how you didn't let the group consensus get to you. I think the bigger problem is that with established views, TLS responses seem to be this absolute authority that nervous 0Ls HAVE TO follow. Some posters are better at this, but positive sentiment is so squashed here.

So the TLS wisdom is only demeaning/overly negative for T14 students?

You certainly make a valid point. TLS wisdom is not only demeaning and overly negative to T14 students; T14 students just happen to be the predominate subset on TLS. But more importantly, I know far less about placement outside of the T14 than within it, so commenting in depth on the accuracy or inaccuracy of how those schools are portrayed would be beyond my expertise. By addressing my comments to T14 students, and students aspiring so much, I can minimize the possibly for misinformation, which is something I think more posters should aim to do. Few of us are truly experts.

Tone, jokeyness, trollyness criticisms I get. But not being all "Oh golly gee, you get into a law school, that's so swell!" enough? Seriously? If you want someone to pat you on the back, go tell your aunt that you got into law school. Go tell literally any human in real life that you got into law school. Columbia or Cooley, they don't care. You'll get plenty of back pats. TLS doesn't need to do that for you. Like, at all.
Nervous 0Ls don't have to follow the advice, there is a literal metric butt ton of advice out there that runs counter to what the hive preaches. All they have to do is find their nearest boomer. They have free will, they can follow that advice if they want. I happen to think the hive is almost always correct (I mean, of course I have to think that, I have become one with it) but it's just one source. People are allowed to make whatever decision they want to and listen to whatever advice they want to.
Anyway, I do think this Ron Howard alt is at least an A- flame job, would read again.
