How does one withdraw from the admit pool at a school? Do you send an email to admissions department or just decline/return the statement of intent straight away?

Either should work at most schools. If Harvard is on your list, though, they only accept regular mail withdrawals, apparently.

Or just wait and don't send the deposit.

^^ That's not really the best way, IMO, because it limits the number of spots they will consider open and thus can admit others to fill.
I either called or emailed-it depends on the school. I know UVA told me I had to send in an email, but Penn and UCLA let me call (that could be because i withdrew my application, not myself from the admit pool)

your safety, or target even, may be someone else's dream school at the top of their waitlist. just one of those things where you don't have to do anything but it sure would be nice and help out a lot of others (like me damn it).

^yah, I agree with escobar on this one. As soon as you've made the decision and are ready to close the door on one school, withdrawing your acceptance is kind of one way to not be a jerk and buck some lawyer stereotypes before you even start school.

Would the email just be sent to their general admissions email ?

For UVA I sent it to the general email with a subject saying "Withdrawing my Admission" or something like that.

good points. how soon after an acceptance should one withdraw? i feel kind of bad withdrawing within the week of my acceptance. i know this sounds stupid, but should i wait awhile so that they think i'm really considering their law school?

prach, if it's for george mason or willie and marie, do it asap! i need that cheap in-state tuition. seriously though, as soon as you realize this is not the school you will attend you should just withdraw. it's not a slap in the face or anything. the way we get letters so sporadically, some people get into their targets before their safeties, reaches before targets, etc. happens every year, i'm sure the adcoms don't cry about it. we're a lot more affected by the process than them i'm sure.

rest assured, it is a much lower ranked school than the ones you mentioned. i am 99% sure i don't want to go there but not 100%. this is my first acceptance (and decision, for that matter) since i applied late.

I don't think the schools will care when you withdraw-they assume that a certain percentage of their candidates are going to decline their offer of admission anyway. They're not taking any of this personally, I don't think.

Definitely don't withdraw if you haven't been accepted anywhere else. Wait until you are 100 percent sure and you're in at more schools.

I think that's a good point. If you're still on the fence, while it would be nice for those waiting, it's still pretty early. You might also be waiting on scholarship info. If a school offers money, it might change your mind. Personally I would love to just be accepted by H or S and then mass withdraw, it would make it much easier.

It really isn't a big deal. They know their expected yield, and they accept people based upon that, not based on who has happened to send their withdrawal in. Maybe very late in the cycle, it will matter.

I did indeed. Not maliciously, just procrastinated on my decision making until literally the last minute. /shrug

This might cheer you up. MY gf was irrationally holding onto her acceptance at W&M w/ scholarship because she wanted to see where I got in. The cycle moved so I didn't actually apply to W&M, so I forced her to decline W&M's offer recently. Money and an "acceptance" letter are already back from her, so I've done my part

For my own peace of minds, and for others, i've withdrawn from virtually everywhere I was admitted, except those I'm closely considering, and Miami in the hope they offer me a trip to Florida....

Anyway, its a personal choice.

Just send an email.

(P.S.: I wouldn't send a letter to Harvard. If they asked why, I'd say, "you don't send a letter when you reject applicants, why should applicants send a letter to reject you?")

Bringing this back from the dead because I was about to ask this myself, but decided to google it first for suggestions... and was directed back to TLS. Feel free to get nostalgic.

E-mailing the admissions departments of schools from which I'm planning on withdrawing appears to be sufficient. Do people typically include their LSAC account numbers, or are those moot at this point (I'm only withdrawing from schools that WLed me)?

I included my LSAC number to make things as easy as possible for them. They responded within 24 hours saying it would all be taken care of, and that I would receive a mailed confirmation.

Subject: Decline of Admission

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am honored that you have given me the opportunity to join your
prestigious law community. However, I have decided to consider other
options more heavily and will not be enrolling in your 2010 incoming
class.

Thank you for your consideration.
